Georgetown Student Dies in House Fire

3318 Prospect St. / DCist photo by Grayson Shepard

As we previously reported, a fire in a Georgetown rowhouse which began around 8:30 a.m. this morning has left one man dead. Georgetown University administrators have identified the victim as senior Daniel Rigby in an e-mail to students. (The full text of the e-mail after the jump.) DCist Georgetown correspondent Grayson Shepard snapped the above photo of the home, located at 3318 Prospect St.

Another Georgetown student drowned Oct. 8 in an accident at a Southwest D.C. marina.

The AP is reporting D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services has deemed the cause of the fire accidental, blaming an "overloaded extension cord" in the rowhouse's basement. From The Hoya:

Two students who requested anonymity said the house was home to rugby players and there had been a party at the house the night before. At least three other students had been in the house at the time of the fire but they escaped safely and were taken for questioning by MPD.

In an e-mail to students, the university's vice president for student affairs, Todd Olson, reminded students that "[c]ounseling staff, chaplains in residence, and residence life staff are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to students in need of personal assistance and support."

This e-mail was sent to Georgetown students and staff earlier today:

Dear students, faculty and staff:

This morning, Sunday, October 17, the Washington Metropolitan Police Department reported a fatality as a result of a fire in a townhouse at 3318 Prospect Street. I am saddened to report that a Georgetown University student, Daniel Rigby (MSB '05), was later identified by MPD as having died in that fire.

The University has been in contact with Daniel's parents, and we are providing support to them. We also are providing resources and support for Daniel's roommates and a number of students who live in nearby houses. Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel's family and all of his friends and acquaintances. We encourage all members of the University community to be supportive of one another during this time of grief, both now and in the days ahead.

This is the second death of one of our students this semester. We now that news such as this will bring about feelings of sadness and grief. Counseling staff, chaplains in residence, and residence life staff are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond to students in need of personal assistance and support.

Representatives from the Office of Student Affairs, Counseling and Psychiatric Services, and Campus Ministry will be available at 3:00 p.m., Monday, October 18, in Village C Alumni Lounge to share this information in person and offer our collective resources to those who
may be in need of support.

Students may always reach a counselor on duty through the Georgetown University Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) by calling (202) 444-7243. Appointments can be made during business hours by calling (202) 687-6985. Chaplains in residence can be reached 24 hours a day by calling the Department of Public Safety at (202) 687-4343.

Sincerely,

Todd A. Olson
Vice President for Student Affairs
