Capitol Hill residents tired of shopping at the mediocre Safeway off Kentucky Avenue SE or the "Un-Safeway" located in the anachronistically named Hechinger Plaza will soon have a new option for full-service grocery shopping on the Hill. Voice of the Hill reports that real estate developer JPI, a leading "fully integrated real estate firm" will develop a mixed residential/commercial area between 13th and 14th St. and Pennsylvania Ave. SE, across from the Potomac Avenue Metro stop. Called Jenkins Row, the development will feature 247 luxury condos, 5,000 square feet of retail space at the ground level, and a 47,000 square foot Harris Teeter grocery store. Though Harris Teeter has long been present in Northern Virginia, this location will be the first inside the District.

Information on actual completion date and prices for the condos are currently unavailable, though given the real estate situation on Capitol Hill, the condos will not come cheap. No plans have been announced for how the 5,000 square feet of retail space will be used. DCist wonders how this new development will affect the rest of Capitol Hill, such as the recently gentrified Barracks Row and community staple Eastern Market, which has been a haven for Capitol Hill residents looking for good fresh food since 1873. One bit of good news for Hill residents, who enjoy some of the better parking in D.C.: Jenkins Row will come with almost 400 parking spots, both above and below ground. Now if the D.C. police would stop illegally ticketing vehicles in the neighborhood, perhaps Hill residents could claim the title of "Best Parking in the District."
