Red Line Mess
A large assembly of WMATA track personnel is out in full force doing emergency repairs on the Red Line downtown near the Judiciary Square double crossover, which has caused massive delays into Maryland. WMATA has set up a special shuttle service to bypass the problem. Red Line trains are sharing the same track between Judiciary Square and Farragut North.
DCist was stuck at the Tenleytown station trying to get to Union Station. When the train operator admitted that he had no idea whether his train would be able to make it all the way to downtown, we decided to try taking the H4 bus across town to Columbia Heights. That move worked quite well. We then got on the Green Line and then had little trouble transfering to the Red Line at Gallery Place-Chinatown. We're sure there are others who had different experieces just sitting on the train.
How did you get around the mess? Or did you just endure it?
When DCist was on the H4 bus, a WMATA train operator was seated next to us, chatting with the bus driver about bus and train operator politics. His walkie talkie was turned on and we could hear central dispatch dealing with the Red Line mess. Though people complain on a day like this about substandard service, we were impressed as to how central dispatch was managing the Red Line in a less-than-ideal circumstance. We just wish it didn't happen.

UPDATE:As of 11:30 a.m., the Red Line is running on both tracks through downtown, but there are still residual delays.

I'd be more forgiving if things like this weren't a regular occurrance, and if Metro maybe gave a little back. I wasted $1.35 just to look at an overcrowded train sitting at DuPont, then another small chunk of change to take the slowest bus ever.
I was stuck at Gallery Place/Chinatown for close to 40 minutes starting at 8:45 am. The line to get on the red line train to Shady Grove was at least 15 people deep. There was some shoving and a number of people yelled in frustration. There were several police officers urging transit riders to stand back, away from the tracks. Every time a train came through the crowd surged, causing a near riot. I finally got to Bethesda at 9:45 am
I walked from Union Station to Dupont Circle.
