Alberto's Closed After Fire
Popular late night Dupont Circle pizzeria Alberto's has been closed since a fire damaged the eatery on Wednesday. Local blogger Brownpau has posted a couple photos on Flickr of Alberto's, including the one here.
When we stopped by the DC Hot! Sandwich Works last night for a late bite to eat (DC Hot! is a local version of Potbelly's located just next door to Alberto's at 2004 P St NW), the exhausted attendants said they have been extremely busy, making over 1,000 sandwiches that day. They had even run out of bread: we had to order a wrap. As we ate our sandwich at least half a dozen people approached Alberto's only to discover it was closed. When we tried calling Alberto's today the answering machine just said they were closed until further notice.

It's a sad sad day when Albertos is taken from me :(
Apparently, the above mentioned Pot Belly chain has filed a lawsuit against Coggins--a sandwich shop at GW--for imitating its look. There are details in this article in the GW Hatchet.
Alberto's was my favorite pizza joint in DC, and I'm sad to see it burnt down.
Are there any other big slice pizza joints in DC that have comparable slices of well seasoned pizza?
Hey! Where did the hot naked guy in the Club Whirled ad go to?????
I really did love Alberto's veggie slices. Good crust. I know I'm not from "New York" so I don't know "pizza" from whatever, but I really liked Al's. I shed a garlicky tear.
So sad about Alberto's - yes - delicious crust! But give the DC Hot guys a break...the owner of DC Hot, Gonzalo Lazcano, died in a tragically unexpected fall last week. He was formerly the jubilant General Manager of Sea Catch, which he left to open his own sandwich shop with his wife- a dream of his. They're probably a little behind. Not that you would have known, but now you do! Gonzalo was a wonderful sweet and kind man. May he rest in peace.
