An L.A. Story

2005_0322_24When dealing with terrorism, national security, top secret intelligence officers and the like, Washington, D.C., is typically the setting for high-stakes drama. But the folks over at Fox, with their hit show "24" seem to ignore us. They're fixated on Los Angeles as the nexus of all things terror. Granted, in real life, LAX has been targeted by terrorists, but last night when "24" characters were talking about someone or something being shot or blown up, etc. at Sepulveda and National boulevards, we felt a little jealous. Why couldn't that have been Columbia Pike and Glebe Road?

Instead, last night's episode revolved around evading detection in the "Broad Street tunnel," somewhere near Olympic Boulevard and Collier Avenue (which we don't think exists, but we'd have to check with LAist). That could totally have been 16th Street's underpass at Scott Circle, just blocks from the White House. If we're forced to deal with terrorism in prime time, that'd make for some high-stakes television plot development. Like L.A.'s Broad Street tunnel in "24," there's even 2005_0322_OCtunnel construction at Scott Circle where evil-doers could switch cars and evade dectection from above!

If Fox is intent on having CTU based in Southern California, we think for maximum effect, the producers at "24" should team up with those at "The O.C." to involve the kids down in Orange County in the war on terrorism. Bioterror at the local mall? A diabolical "View to a Kill"-like plot to generate a huge earthquake off the California coast to ruin their surfing? Imagine the advertising dollars and the publicity. Even Joe Millionaire could make a cameo to recharge his career! Then again, that Rooney concert featured sometime back on the "O.C." could be considered a form of terrorism.

Columbia Pike and Glebe? Oh no... they're going to blow up Arby's!

Hold on a minute there ye olde DCists. I totally heart Rooney. To call them terrorists means the terrorists win. Um, or something.

Regardless of Rooney's music, the band's appearance in prime time was a sketchy move. Sure it sold CDs to middle schoolers, but is that what they wanted?

Those lovely snarkasauruses over at Television Without Pity are supposed to be using the available facts given by the show to determine the precise LA location of the CTU headquarters. I'll have to check one of these nights to see if they've made progress.

My favorite 24-ism is the constant mention of "Division", like at CTU, they are so bad ass that they tortue and decapitate people, but those mad dogs at "Division" even put fear into the most hardened CTU agent's heart! The terrifying and crippling power of a bloated bureaucracy, methinks. But scary, nonetheless. I hope DCist never gets a "Division". I do hope DCist manages to get Reiko Aylesworth to their next event, though, because she is an absolute fox.

I've always wondered how L.A. has been the center of the spy universe in TV (both in 24 and Alias -- how is it that the L.A. office of the CIA is the wellspring for so many missions). However, as a former Angeleno, I was quite happy that my old 'hood was namechecked last night. As for the Broad Street tunnel at Olympic and Collier? Never heard of it.
