March Music Agenda

2005_0302_BSB.jpgGoodness - there are concerts flying so fast at our head that we hardly know where to look. Should we go to Crooked Fingers at the Black Cat, or Steve Earle at the 9:30 Club? Indie Rock Karaoke at DC9, or Jump, Little Children at Iota? Or - the best option of all - the Backstreet Boys show at the 9:30 Club on March 30? Tickets go on sale this Saturday at noon, and we do consider "I Want It That Way" to be the song of the 90s. Choices, choices. Read on for some of our musical picks for the month of March.

Friday, 3/4: Tuneful, quirky rockers Clem Snide are at the Black Cat. $12. Don't forget the DCist ticket giveaway for the show!

Friday, 3/4: Also out this Friday are the Secret Machines at the 9:30 Club. With Autolux and Moving Units. $15.

Saturday, 3/5: Ambulance Ltd. plays swirling, melodic songs that remind us of early shoe-gazing Britpop stuff. Black Cat, $12.

Saturday, 3/5: Lou Barlow, formerly of Sebadoh and Dinosaur, Jr., plays Iota in Arlington. We'd get out early for this one, as Iota's shoebox space probably won't hold all the people who'll come out to see this influential indie rock figure. $10.

Monday, 3/7: Imagine if the Beatles had been punks. And female. And Japanese. Then you'll have Shonen Knife, who are playing the Black Cat tonight. Seattle punk rockers Visqueen open. $12.

Monday, 3/7: Much to the dismay of alt-rock fans everywhere, the Jayhawks recently announced their break up. But Mark Olson and Gary Louris of the band are still touring, and you can catch them one last time at the Birchmere. $19.50.

Wednesday, 3/9: DC9 picks up on the Indie Rock Karaoke. We can't wait to belt out some Pavement.

Wednesday, 3/9: Jill Scott, Philly queen of R&B, is playing four nights this month at DAR Constitution Hall, starting tonight. The other dates are 3/10, 3/30, and 3/31. Tickets will run you $55.50, but we can assure you that Scott's warm, honeyed voice will be worth it.

Thursday, 3/10: We bought our tickets to this a month ago: Irish rockers Ash played with much-hyped dancerock group The Bravery. Black Cat, $13.

Friday, 3/11: Hot Hot Heat play fun, tense synth-rock. With up-and-comers Louis XIV and local faves Washington Social Club. 9:30 Club, $15.

Sunday, 3/13: Menomena is at the Black Cat backstage this evening; they play crazily creative, pop-oriented music, which is in all honesty rather hard to describe. But unconventionality is always a great thing. $7. Warning: their web site may induce seizure. Seriously.

Saturday, 3/19: Nashville-based crooner Steve Earle brings his ambitious and lovely country-rock stylings to the 9:30 Club. $25.

Thursday, 3/24: Crooked Fingers play the Black Cat; $12.

Wednesday, 3/30: Everybody's favorite former Blur-ian, Graham Coxon, brings his Brit act to the Black Cat. $15.

Thursday, 3/31: The North Carolina group Jump, Little Children plays accessible, catchy guitar-driven power pop. Iota, $12.
