Out and About: Weekend Picks

Man, after last night's DCist Happy Hour, we're not sure we want to do anything for the rest of the weekend except curl up in our beds and pound Advil. But for the rest of you folks, here are some events we think are worth dropping by.

FRIDAY:
>>In this week's Art Agenda, we erroneously reported that photographer Samantha Wolov's exhibit opened Saturday evening; the opening actually takes place tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Washington School of Photo in Bethesda.

2005_0506_decemberists.jpg>>The new twee takes over the 9:30 Club tonight when The Decemberists come to town. We checked out lead singer Colin Meloy's entertaining solo show last fall, and we're pretty sure tonight's concert should be great. Opener Rebecca Gates goes on at 10 p.m.; The Decemberists are at 11:30. (And you know you're getting old when you cringe at a Friday night 11:30 start time. So old.) The show is also being streamed on NPR.

>> The National Cathedral hosts "A Salute to Switzerland" today and tomorrow from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The annual benefit for the gardens and grounds of the Cathedral will include a flower mart, "uniquely Swiss events," (including cow milking and hip hop -- of course! Wait ... what?), food tasting, and tours of the grounds. All kidding aside, this sounds like a great outdoor family event for what promises to be a beautiful weekend. Call (202) 537-3185 for more information.

SATURDAY:
>> Head to The Plains to catch the Virginia Gold Cup today; doors open at 10 a.m. and the first race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Frankly, from our experiences, the whole horse race thing has always been more about the mint juleps than the animals -- and that's exactly why it's so much fun.

>>Today is Free Comic Book Day! Many stores in the area will be participating; major publishers -- and some smaller ones - print special editions of comics to be given away free to anyone that shows up.

SUNDAY:
>> Don't forget to wish good old mom a happy Mother's Day! Why not pony up for a Mother's Day Brunch at Galileo, or take her on a Wildflower Walking Tour?

What do you have planned this weekend?

I was born in Switzerland, and I definetely plan on exploring my Swissness tomorrow at the Cathedral.

But seriously, cow-milking and alphorn blowing? Yes, very Swiss, but yes, very embarassing. Swiss hip-hop? I'm skipping that. But I will be savoring the world's biggest fondue.

I may just try and test my countrymen by starting a fight. Knowing them, they'll reassert their neutrality, send in the Red Cross, and want to talk about it. Pussies.

Rebecca Gates is opening for the Decemberists? Argh! How did I just now find out about this?
