Free National Mall Wifi Needs Smithsonian Assistance

2005_0513_opplogo.JPGA group trying to bring free wireless internet access to the National Mall is urging people to contact the Smithsonian and encourage them to allow the group to use of the institution's buildings to install six antennae. In the alert the group reports that the Smithonian broke off discussions after nearly a year of negotiations in February, but has been encouraged by a recent report that they may be reconsidering the decision. The plan being discussed wouldn't cost the Smithsonian anything, as the group would reimburse any staffing costs associated with the installation.

The nonprofit Open Park Project has been working to bring free wifi internet access to the National Mall area - their hotspot at the U.S. Supreme Court is active, and they provided temporary internet access along Pennsylvania Avenue during the presidential inauguration. The group argues that in addition to serving the Smithsonian's public mission of providing information to the public, the network would help remedy the institution's "IT shortfall" by providing Smithsonian visitors access to some of the Smithonian's many online-only resources, which aren't easily accessible from the museums because there are no public internet terminals. DCist is a fan of free internet and think the plan sounds like a good one. We hope Smithsonian can find some extra roof space to contribute to the effort.

I've found their WiFi hotspots very useful and I don't understand why the Smithsonian isn't being more accommodating. Maybe the Smithsonian has some sinister plot to have fee-based WiFi on the mall.

The Smithsonian has hundreds if not thousands of staff in that area connected to the 'Net, they must have a pretty substantial deal with some ISP to provide all that service. It wouldn't surprise me if their current provider is pressuring them to obstruct this arrangement, for some reason or another.

This is really sad. DC is one of the few cities that I've visited that dosent' have some type of free Wifi access in public spaces. Even Cleveland, OH and Greensboro, NC have wi-fi enabled parks. Boston and NYC have had private groups donate free wi-fi to parks and businesses. I'm surprised no one has made it an issue here.

Unfortunately in DC there are only a handful of places you can get free wi-fi and they all tend to be crowded. T-Mobile unfortunately has a monopoly on this town.

Can I just ask, do we NEED wi-fi access on the Mall? Can't we just, like, shut our laptops for a few minutes, lift our eyes above the screen and engage with our environment for a change? The 'net's not going to go away if we stop paying attention to it for a few minutes.
