Don Geronimo's Wife Dies in Tragic Accident

2005_0712_fredasorce.jpgIf you were listening to WJFK on the drive home yesterday, you probably noticed that the normally witty banter of Don Geronimo and Mike O'Meara was on tape, though they were set to be live on the air. Sadly, this is because Freda Wright-Sorce, wife of Geronimo (real name Mike Sorce) died in a head-on collision in Ocean City, MD, Sunday.

Sorce, married to Geronimo for 23 years, was a frequent guest on the Don & Mike Show. Co-host Mike O'Meara described her as "the conscience of the show," often chastising O'Meara and Geronimo for going too far in their bits. She is survived by Geronimo and their 20-year old son, Bart. Longtime fans know both at the very least by name -- Geronimo signed off with "Love you Freda, love you Bart" at the end of each show.

Don & Mike have been on the air in the D.C. area for over 20 years. Though there has been no official word from WJFK on the status of the show in the wake of these events, Don & Mike's website promises "We'll be back."

UPDATE: Thanks to many commenters, who also pointed out that Robb Spewak, Mike O'Meara, and Buzz Burbank also took time to reflect on Freda's life and her relationship with Don Geronimo live on the air in between "Best of Freda" segments. DCist apologizes for the incomplete statement.

Mike, Buzz and Robbay offered up a touching on-air tribute yesterday afternoon. I've been a long time fan of the show, and it feels like I've lost an extended family member.

I'm a bit disappointed that it took DCist so long to pick up on this news. For anyone that grew up in the DC area this is very sad to hear. It's also unfortunate that your news is half inaccurate, and clearly just scribbed from the various news releases. The show was not on tape delay yesterday, Mike, Buzz and Robbay were all on the air. Mike returned from every break with the news of Freda's death. The only thing on tape delay were various clips of Freda on teh show as a tribute to her. The quote that is used above (Co-host Mike O'Meara described her as "the conscience of the show.") was in fact from that broadcast. However, Kanishka clearly pulled it from DCRTV, WTOP, the DC Examiner, or one of the other outlets that covered the story, and did not, as he seems to imply, listen to the show yesterday afternoon.

It has been a tragic few days for DC radio. WPGC's long-time news anchor, David Haines, passed away on Sunday as well. DC will miss his distinctive voice.

I was a bit disappointed as well, but to their credit, it appears that only a handful of DCist contributors actually grew up in the area. The same is probably true of regular readers.

It pains me whenever I hear of something like this. Sad to see somebody lose their spouse.. I dread the day that might happen to me.

Re: being disappointed, I think you should understand that most dcist contributors are volunteers and, as such, should be appreciated for doing what they do. This post may not have been 'late' if you had emailed them about it.

Please check out the comment stream on yesterday's Weekly Music Agenda. I felt it would be better to wait until today on this -- maybe a bad decision. And yes, I did listen yesterday; however, my commute is short and I tuned in right after a break and during the beginning of the segment where Freda interviewed people on the cruise whilst drunk. Good stuff, which reminded me of what a good sport Freda was.

I'm not saying "DCist sucks" or anything, that's why I tried to say it as politely as possible. Were I not on Route 50 on my way back from the beach during the show, I would have emailed it in. :)

It's also a bit unfortunate that there aren't many DC natives that are regular contributors to the site. I guess the problem is that there aren't many DC area natives period, due to the transient nature of this place. I've been listening to Don and Mike since I was in middle school, and even though you'll get lots of people that say they suck and they're washed up, etc. they still entertain me and continue to get great ratings. Anyway -- My condolences go out to the Sorce family, a major DC radio personality was lost Sunday evening. I'm not sure what the show we'll be like once Don comes back.

Thanks Doug. Your comments are appreciated. I was stuck in the office and didn't get the news until 4:45, and I think there are only two D&M listeners on staff (might be wrong).

As far as locals vs. natives on DCist, we've got two definite locals, at least one close-by, and a number who have been in DC for a long time. Nature of the beast, I guess -- but we all love DC.

i'm a DC native, but i wouldn't say it's unfortunate that many of the contributers aren't. many DCists who are from elsewhere know a lot more about the city than i do, or have lived here for several years and have learned an enormous amount about the city in the time they've been residents.

anyway, my condolences also go out to the sorce family.

Born at Columbia Hospital was I. And remember, drink whenever someone describes DC as "transient." :)

I was so sad yesterday when I listened to the show. Thanks for the DCist coverage; I would urge those who want up-to-the-minute news to rely on professional news services to get more timely, researched updates.

Freda was a nice feminine element to the show that a lot of women listeners appreciated. The love and commitment Don and Freda had for each other and Bart was a heartwarming part of the show. The family element was a nice complement to the witty, cynical, sarcastic, "boys will be boys" tone of the show overall.

My prayers with the Sorce family and with Mike, Buzz, Rob and Lisa, Beth Ann, and the WJFK team.

Any info on how we fans can offer more direct support to them?

Has anyone mentioned the bizarre coincidence that David Haines used to do news and comment for D&M back when they were on WAVA?

The universe is odd, sometimes.

I used to go away from DC for long periods of time due to school, but hearing "Burnt Toast and Coffee Time" and "IIIIT'S FRIDAY!" from David Haines on the Donnie Simpson Show during the morning commute and listening and the Don and Mike show in the afternoon commute were two very DC things that I looked forward too when I would get back. I knew that I was home when I heard them. Now David's gone and the Don and Mike show will never be the same.

Audrey,

Mike was saying yesterday that once they have a better idea how they are going to go about listener support, they will let the listeners know.

Hmm, I don't want to pile on Kanishka, because his stuff is pretty good, but even though is part-time, no money, mission of love, etc..., you really shouldn't write a story, even a blog post, with confusing and inaccurate sourcing. It's OK to say something about having read wire reports to get the full details, not just linking to them. No one would discredit your story if it had included a sentence about catching part of the show and doing some hunting around, rather than intimiating you heard it all firsthand. I'm not suggesting you eliminate your colorful styles, but I think an investment in a copy of the AP style guide would be good for the site at this mature stage. It will help all of you with some basics of journalism, ie sourcing, quoting and voice, that is not intuitive, but is crucial to any good (and especially any serious, as this story is) reporting that you may do in the future. Not a criticism, just a comment.

Yo, Blah. Chill the fork out.

Toby- It bothers me to read a story, take it at face value, then read more (the comments) and realize that half of it isn't accurate, or at least not as clear as it could be. If that doesn't bother you, congratulations, there may be an opening in the WH press office soon. You'lll fit right in.

Thanks Toby, but I think Blah has a point of sorts. Its hard though -- my source was someone on the comment thread of a DCist post, so I couldn't (easily) link to it. But I did link to the very first news outlet to break the story (WBOC) in the first citation, and then to other media.

Its hard -- kind of a metablogging issue. See, I think linking is sourcing -- it directly points to where we're getting our information from. And I don't think I was trying to make any claim on originality, or that I listened to the entire show.

Still, I understand where some of these comments are coming from -- but an AP style guide has nothing to say about blogging, yet. Hey guys: at least we're better than Drudge.

Wait -- blah, I think you and I were commenting at the exact same time. What in my post is inaccurate or unclear? I didn't write "When this DCist turned on the radio at 3 PM yesterday he learned that..." I used a second person conditional. Confused...

definitely better than drudge. :) Keep up the good work, guys.

Wow. I've only been in DC for about two years, but I quickly grew to love the Don & Mike show. That's terrible news.

Kanishka, my apologies. I was in a rush to get some lunch and trying to explain to Toby why I thought better sourcing would help. I overstated what I was trying to say. I shouldn't have said inaccurate. Regarding unclear, that only pertains to the way you decided to write the story-- you started with drivetime on Monday, which someone later said was not fully on tape, but live with taped Freda bits interspersed. If you had left out that part and not talked about listening on Monday, you would've been fine not going into further detail. But since you did talk about listening to the show, I think you were under some obligation to explain how you came to the full story of Freda's death. Ie- you listened to a bit of it, then found wire reports and info from a friend.

Ok-- apology part two, I've taken your good story and torn it apart over minor quibbles. There is nothing like DCist in terms of aggregating the type of local info I like to read, so don't let my nit-pickery dissuage you. :) Thanks.

It is hard (mostly for DCist writers, but also for DCist readers) to find the balance between "professional-level" reporting and blogger reporting. Ideally, I think we readers are looking for thoughtful, well-written pieces that do a fair amount of reporting "leg work," but we also want to see some personality.

For the readers: Remember that DCist writers are essentially volunteers; if you want professional news, go to a professional news outlet.

For the DCist bloggers: Check yourself before you play the "hey...we don't get paid" card. Sometimes, you complain that we don't treat you as professionals when you've gone above and beyond to do your work. But other times, you gripe that you're not being paid, we shouldn't have such high expectations, etc., when you're criticized for throwing something together. Uh...which is it? Pick one and stick with it.

Regardless, I think a lot of us here are fans of the Don and Mike Show. This is a nice place for some fans to get together and discuss the show and this sad development. We'd appreciate updates, especially as to what fans can do to help.

Blah: We cool dog.

I also love DCist.

The problem arises when you hit on something that some of us have been attached to (the D&M show) for over half our lives, we get a little picky. :) Keep up the good work.

Uhhh, so why don't you correct your story. List the facts, since we are talking about a local trajedy. I was born and raised in DC and am also a family member of a key show contributor. I'm not going to name drop, but you need to swallow your price and fix the entry.

Cool, saw that you made the edits

Also, Rob is spelled with one "b"...

Robert Waddams Spewak II

To do otherwise would have been a trajedy, bringing about a catharsiss of peety and fere.

Sounds sad but eventualy you have to move on ... how bout it!!!

I just wanted to see the pic of Chris Coolies dick, then I thought about Don And Mike... Of course. (skins and dicks) I grew up with D&M, I first heard Charley Stuwankestabolack when I was 17, and became a fan. I even followed the rules and didn't call until I was 18. I was 24 when I first called them from New Orleans on a pay phone during Mardi Grass. I heard about Barts first job, and learning to drive. Sex Pies and Videotape. The many (ins and outs) of Buzz Burbankes colon. Phone Hoe theatre, Honk for cash (the beautiful game that never worked) Killing cell phones, Thanksgiving sex shows, phone booth olympics, That bitch Rudy Martski, fingers smell like butt, and most of all "There is no sharper dude on the face of gods earth, than Major Bill Smith." To Don and Mike, the crew and mostly to me, because who the fuck will ever read this and understand it. You will always be with me. Love you guys... LOVE YOU GUYS!
