Trading Spaces

act_kwame_brown.jpg The Wizards and Nationals made a pair of deals last night, attempting to plug big holes in their respective rosters.

That Nats picked up center fielder Preston Wilson in exchange for right hander Zach Day, outfielder J.J. Davis and future considerations. Wilson led the majors in RBI's in 2003 and should supply some power to the lowest scoring team in the league. Hopefully this will bring an end to the experiment that was Carlos Baerga as our #4 hitter. Wilson is batting .258 this year with 15 homers, 47 RBI and 77 strikeouts. He is expected to join the team in Milwaukee today. Current CF Brad Wilkerson will move over to first base until the injured Nick Johnson returns.

It's worth noting that Day is the second pitcher on the staff to be shipped out of town after fueding with manager Frank Robinson. However, the Nats made another move yesterday, bolstering their bullpen by adding lefty reliever Mike Stanton. Stanton was recently released by the NY Yankees because of his ineffectiveness against right handed batters, but he can still get the lefties out.

Not to be outdone, it looks like the Wizards have agreed in principle to a deal sending the much maligned Kwame Brown to the LA Lakers in return for Caron Butler and the heavily traveled Chucky Atkins. Expect to see a slew of "Great move by the Lakers!" articles in the next few days, but don't fret Wiz fans. DCist isn't so sure this is a good move for Kwame or the Lakers. Yes, Brown has all the physical tools, but it's not like playing in a major media market under Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson is going to make his life any easier. If you ask us, the Wiz made out like bandits on this deal. Butler can drop 30 points on any given night and will fit right in with Gilbert Arenas and Antawn Jamison. Atkins is a very capable back up PG that might make DCist fave Steve Blake expendable.

definitely a good move for the WIz; Butler fills in for the loss of Hughes well, and Atkins is, well, Chucky Atkins. I too decry the possible loss of Steve Blake, however.

I've been tracking this potential deal all week hoping it will go down. Caron Butler could possibly be a potential star in the league but at the very least is a dependable young starter. In college, he was a force for UConn in the Big East. I know too well being a Pitt fan. Local Terp fans should remember the game he had against them during their NCAA championship run. As for losing Blake...I'd be more concerned with losing Juan Dixon. Apparently, the Heat are interested. Remember his performance in Game 4 of the first round vs. the Bulls? Dixon is on his way too becoming a preeminent sixth-man in the league.

losing dixon is definitely a bigger hurt, hoping steve stays was more for sentimental reasons, if those are still permissible in sports these days

Butler was the 10th pick in the 2002 draft, many considered him the best player in the draft. Of the players that went ahead of him, Amare Stoudemire has turned out to be the best, Yao at #1 was a mistake, everybody else has been a bust except Nene I guess. If Butler was available at 11, the Wiz would probably have taken him instead of Jeffries. He is only 25 and should be entering his prime now. Always had high hopes for Kwame but its obvious now the Wiz should've taken Tony Parker, RJ, or Gasol. Gil Arenas went in the 2nd round that year.

Preston homers in his first Nats at bat. Not a bad start. Nicely done, front office.

Kwame's draft class (2001) was exceptionally poor. Gilbert is the only player from that class to be named an all-star. 2002 wasn't as bad. Tayshaun Prince is another standout that wasn't mentioned. Anyone would have taken Yao #1 and even though he isn't as good as Amare he still is one of the best centers in the league. He just needs to cool it with the offseason play in China.
