Borf's Big Debut?

2005_07_BORF.jpgOnly a week after his reign of terror was ended by authorities, Borf seems ready to enter the public eye. Fliers posted on the metro and circulating emails report that our favorite seditious spraypainter will make a public appearance tomorrow afternoon in Dupont Circle:

"Tomorrow, Saturday July 23rd
MEET BORF at Dupont Circle

Meet at 4pm in Dupont Circle for a celebration and discussion of public art, graffiti and vandalism. There will be sidewalk chalk, stencil cutting materials, free spray paint, hopscotch, handstands, millions of dollars, and the first in a series of communiques from Borf. Borf is not caught. Come tomorrow so we can talk about what all this shit means."

The legitimacy of this is unknown, as is the exact location of the purported meeting, although Dupont Circle itself is probably a safe bet. Is this a hoax? Is this a trap? Is Borf aware of the irony of holding a meeting at a location straddled by two Cosi's, bastions of all that is "boojy?" We'll just have to wait and find out.

Be sure to show him the comic.

Wouldn't it be nice if people did something useful instead? Like volunteer to clean up the locally owned businesses that Borf tagged?

I mean, it's not like I'm going to do it, but I'm not gonna go apeshit about the possibility of him being in the Circle either.

I hope someone goes along and punches all these Borf idiots right in the mouth. Hard.

I plan to show up there with my J. Crew collar popped up and my Blackberry clipped to my belt complaining that "the system" always looks at me like I'm some yuppie destroying the neighborood by supporting Cosi's and Starbucks. If Borf points out the Cosi® Wasabi Roast Beef sandwich in my left hand and my Mint Mocha Chip Frappuccino® blended coffee in my right I'll just note that "that's just more evidence of how messed up society is."

why doesnt he have a meeting in his hime town? and even better tag it up there.

did anybody see the post article on borf's cultural meaning and ramifications for today's generation of american youth, as written by some 21 year old british student who only encountered his graffiti a few weeks ago? relevant.

Interesting article, and by "interesting" I mean "depressing". It seems like the gist of that Post article is "Wahh. My generation (or more accurately, the particular age-based, ethnic and socioeconomic silo that I believe I happen to fit into) doesn't have a common cultural touchstone like Ginsburg/Kerouac/Springsteen/Dylan/Harry Potter, so instead of trying to become or create (or even seek out) my generation's Ginsburg/Kerouac/Springsteen/Dylan/Harry Potter, I'm going to give undue attention to bratty kids like BORF and cynical boojy hacks like Shepard Fairey who create things that are intrinsically meaningless and infantile." Ugh. I’m not exactly in the Ayn Rand fan club, but those guys pretty much hit all the marks for the definition of "Second-Hander." When faced with a similarly bleak worldview in the late 1970s, (largely) white kids created punk rock, and (largely) black and Hispanic kids created hip-hop. We get BORF and OBEY GIANT. Jeez louise.

What I don't get is why people keep saying Borf was "ubiquitous." I suppose he was if you've never left Dupont Circle and its immediate environs. Travel to such distant lands as, say, Mt. Pleasant, or Woodley Park, or anywhere outside the three or four northwest neighborhoods he felt safe in, and the guy never existed at all.

Hating on Shepard Fairey?!? Jim, sounds like you're jealous that you're still splitting gyros while SF is getting checks with 6 zeros.

Well, harDCore, I'm pretty far from splitting gyros, thanks very much. As far as the six zeroes go, are you equating financial success with actual talent and contribution to society? Cause I'm pretty sure David Hasselhoff and Britney Spears are fairly well off too.

dcist is boogy.

Borf was more than just a graffiti artist, he was campaigning for something he believed in. And you're going to hate on him because he's going down with his beliefs? Think before you speak.
