The Big Bead Theory

2005_0727_necklace.jpgThe recent trend toward giant beaded necklaces seems inspired by the oversized-sunglasses-clad, jumbo-hobo-bag-toting, venti-skim-latte-swilling Olsen twins’ style philosophy, or, “the bigger the accessory, the smaller you look.”

If you haven’t yet tried the massive bead look, we should warn you that initially you might feel a bit ridiculous. But once you conquer your insecurities about looking like Wilma Flintstone, you may find yourself piling on multiple stands and going bigger and bolder with bead size. In fact, this DCist has found that a lot of guys have embraced the big-bead trend, if only because it affords them the opportunity to make such observations as “Those are some big balls,” and “Her balls are bigger than yours.”

You can find single- or multi-layer necklaces of beads made from plastic, wood, glass and stones – even Kukui nuts – hanging on string, raffia, leather or metal chains. Versions of the look range from sleek strands by BCBG (3210 M Street NW) to the funky combinations of yarn and wooden beads that Urban Outfitters (3111 M St. NW and 737 7th St. NW) appears to have commissioned a gang of preschoolers to create. If you want a less mass-produced look, head over to Beadazzled (1507 Connecticut Ave. NW) and craft your own version. Or you can always give your favorite kindergartner a box of penne pasta and some yarn and see what happens.
