Davis Chosen to Lead Katrina Panel

header_hp.jpgHoping to diffuse controversy over a special Congressional panel charged with investigating the federal government's shortcomings in the response to Hurricane Katrina, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert has tapped local Rep. Tom Davis (R-Va.) to be the panel's leader. The panel has been a flashpoint of debate in recent days, with Congressional Democrats claiming it would "whitewash" what have come to be perceived as substantial failures in the federal response to the storm and its aftermath.

Davis, who represents a swath of Northern Virginia encompassing Fairfax and Prince William counties, is seen as a nominally independent Republican who has used his perch as the chairman of the House Government Reform Committee to promote local causes. In late April, Davis, a longtime supporter of District voting rights, introduced legislation that would grant the District a full voting member in the House, and more recently he proposed using $1.5 billion in federal funds for capital improvements in Metro. Davis also put a quick stop to a proposal by Rep. Henry Bonilla (R-Tex.) to rename 16th Street "Ronald Reagan Boulevard," and came under fire for insinuating that Congress would take actions against Major League Baseball if the Washington Nationals were sold to a bidding group that includes billionaire George Soros, a prominent anti-Bush financier.

In a recent press release, Davis, pictured above, expressed concern over the federal response to Katrina, stating,

My staff and I have spent much of the past week examining the aftermath of this tragic natural disaster. It has become increasingly clear that local, state, and federal government agencies failed to meet the needs of the residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Now it's our job to figure out why, and to make sure we are better prepared for the future.

Love the subtlety of the "nominal" qualifier to Rep. Davis' independence. Let me guess--is Jim Jeffords your ideal of an "independent" Republican?

No, he's my idea of an independant, you moron.

That would be my point, that Jeffords, formerly a Republican, formally switched over to being an independent. Please adjust your sarcasm meter, it appears to be off.

Also, let us savor the delicious irony of an irate poster labeling someone a moron while incorrectly spelling a simple word in their own response.

Irate poster? Excuse me? I only post comments under my real name, so that comment was not mine.

Martin, I was referring to the guy who posted a comment in response to mine. Obviously I wasn't referring to you, the author of the piece. I consider the word "poster" interchangeable with "commenter."

Matt, your future trolling will be far more effective if you're not so terribly predictable.

My guess is that he's referred to as "nominally independent" because of his threats over Soros' potential ownership of the Nationals, given the iron-strong party discipline of the Republicans over the past 5 years or so. As for whether Jeffords will be referred to as "nominally independent," well, we'll have to wait till he's mentioned in a DCist piece.

Opinion on Representative Davis can vary.

He won in a district that favored Bush over Kerry by a razor thin (.6%) margin. I've read articles in NRO that seem to insinuate he's sort of a RINO. I believe the Christian Coalition has him rated at a pretty soft 65%.

Yet he's voted with the GOP on a number of high-profile bills: intact dilation and extraction, bankruptcy restrictions, same-sex marriage and benefits, passage and implementation of the energy bill, etc. But, at the same time, he has something of an independent streak in his vote pattern as well (he voted against ending preferential treatment in college admissions, he supported Kyoto implementation).

There's really room to call him "nominally independent" or "nominally Republican" depending on your point of view.
