Breaking News: Panda Cub Named
One-hundred days on, and the suspense finally comes to an end.
Washington's newest panda cub will now be known as Tai Shan, which means "peaceful mountain." While a fitting name, we're still partial to "Butterstick." The people have spoken, though, and we're not ones to resort to violence to make our point. But we will sulk.
Update: Via the Post, we find that "Tai Shan" received 88,245 votes, 44 percent of the total votes cast. Second place went to "Qiang Qiang," which received 66,195 votes. This being Washington, representatives from the "Qiang Qiang" camp are alleging massive voter fraud.

With all the fidgeting and squirming going on, he doesn't look like a peaceful mountain. More like a fidgety foothill. Still, it's better than those variations on "China-America".
I'm happy to report that the name "Tai Shan" sounds a lot like "taisan," which in the Philippines is a popular Filipino-Chinese butter cake snack just about the size and shape of a butter stick. As far as this Filipino is concerned, the panda's name is Butterstick.
tai shan is also the name of the restuarant in chinatown i used to go to after eat first on 7th closed. then i got sick sick sick from their nasty sesame cold noddles and cant even look at the place anymore. at least eat first has reopened.
i'm going to call him "eat first", when im not calling him butterstick, that is.
I heard CNN's Miles O'Brien this morning use the name "Butterstick" in talking about Tai Shan. You heard it here first from DCist.
Dental_FlossTycoon beat me to it!
I also heard a mention of Butterstick on CNN this morning :)
This is a defeat for the Butterstick movement but a victory for Neil Peart fans everywhere.
Dear God, that's an obscure reference. I mean, not only does it involved admitting to listening to Rush, but admitting to listening to the Hold Your Fire album.
And this comment, um... doesn't do any of that. Nope.
Yeah, I am always going to think Butterstick, whether I intend to or not. I'll probably show all my neices and nephews this panda at the zoo years from now and still ref. the butterstick name and where it came from. I tried to avoid pandamania, but that thing is just too cute. Can't help myself...
It won't be that many years from now -- Butterstick is owned by China and will return there at age two.
tai shan is a goood man!
