Morning Roundup: Many On The Mall Edition

2005_1014_cuke.jpgToday will be positively depressing - cloudy with patchy drizzle with highs in the low 60s. What do you have planned for the weekend? Dropping by the New Pornographers (or the Foo Fighters)? Stopping by the D.C. Flickr group's Georgetown show? We'll have our full picks later today.

Preparations for 'Millions More': Area officials are preparing for crowds for this weekend's Millions More Movement, an anniversary commemoration of the Million Man March. A number of street closings and parking restrictions for the mall area have been announced by Metropolitan Police and the Examiner is reporting Metro is planning to open two hours early and provide trains downtown every 3 minutes before the event begins. The Post also has this helpful map summarizing street closures and other planned activities downtown.

More Speed Cameras: Speed cameras placed by the D.C. government at the 600 block of New York Ave. Northeast and in the 3400 block of Benning Road Northeast and a red light camera at Florida and New York Ave. Northeast will be begin issuing tickets this weekend. (Click here to view a DCist map of the approximate locations of the speed cameras.) The W. Times reports that during the 1-month trial period the cameras caught 25,000 speeders and 546 red light violators. Meanwhile, the numbers of speeders and red light runners are both at the lowest levels they have been since the cameras were introduced.

Briefly Noted: Two die in apartment fire ... Panda cub's cuteness hits extreme levels ... Shady Grove development considered ...

I would love to have a camera on Sherman Ave. These cameras not only show traffic down, but have an unmeasureable effect on pedestrians!

Nice photo of Kathy Patterson in the Evans Scandal post (below). Of course she's smiling. Now that Evans has serious troubles, Patterson can enter the race for the City Council Chair and not have to stand in Evans's shadow. Maybe Evans brought baseball to DC, but Patterson is the one playing hardball.
