The Weekly Feed: Yawn Edition

2005_1104_yawn.jpgThis has been a pretty slow food week for the Washington area. Sure, some chefs have left their posts, and some chefs published masturbatory recipes in recently "revamped" magazines. These things happen all the time. Nevertheless, DCist seeks to sniff out the news anyway.

Del Ray a Witless Wasteland
Don't ever say DCist doesn't follow up. It's just that sometimes it hurts us to do it; take this post as an example. Remember a couple weeks back when we told you that the Del Ray Dreamery was being forced to change its name and that a contest was underway to choose a new one? Well, the contest has ended and lame boringness has won. The new name? That Custard Place in Del Ray. Seriously. Was this honestly the best name submitted? The sound you hear is the collective groan of those of us who love the frozen custard store and its quirkiness, but hate the new and uncreative name.

2005_1104_waitress.jpgLogan Circle Restaurant Still Searching for Help
Craig tells us that the new addition to the gayborhood, Viridian, is still searching for cooks and servers. Wasn't this place supposed to open weeks ago? It's played host to an art show, but hasn't slung any chow. According to a tip from Tom, the place will feature a menu that changes daily. That's all well and good, but we want to know where they got the name, which is also a techie green design movement led by a "pope-emperor." Sounds nice.

Is There Skullduggery Afoot?
Soon-to-be new restaurant, Jin, next to DCist fave Busboys and Poets is still in the works, apparently. However, we were surprised to see a link from Metrocurean take us down a dead-end: Jin's site has been disabled. What the deuce?! We here at DCist wonder what has happened to the Asian-Caribbean fusion joint. Is it an attack from the anti-Asian-Caribbean forces in the area or did the place not pay its hosting bills?

Speaking of U Street
A donrockwell.com post has us intrigued. Brown Sugar Southern Cuisine on Vermont and U? What? DCist is drawing a blank. Do any of you commenters have the scoop?

Brown Sugar has been stuck in the same development stage for at least 6 months. Over the 4th of July weekend, someone from the restaurant set up shop on the sidewalk to grill ribs and promote the space. But no dice yet. Regardless, Ooohs and Aaaahs across the street will scratch that south'ren itch.

The truly pressing question about Brown Sugar: Why is there a spider illustrated the store's "coming soon" banner? Spiders aren't soul food!

What, because Dickie's Frozen Custard is just so creative?

Go for the custard, the name is unimportant.

Has anyone heard about Visions re-opening? I saw the lights on inside the other night.

Yes, speaking of U Street, does anyone know what the status is of that pool hall at 12th and U that was supposed to open up at the "end of summer"?

Shut up, DCist.

You want to talk about "masturbatory" pheomena?

Check your food writing. (See especially review of Rice.)

Anybody know when OpenCity is opening in Woodley Park? Looks so close to being open...but they've been teasing me for a year with on and off construction, so I'm not holding my breath

Spider = Anansi? Just a guess.

I've been looking for that Brown Sugar place to open and start a soul food war. But odds are the restaurant is stuck in either financing or licensing morass. Oh well.

I noticed the same spider on the Brown Sugar sign...makes me think the place is growing cobwebs inside.

As for Cue Bar, which was supposed to open on U St., they took the sign down and it looks pretty abandoned. All I saw last time I peeked in was a chewed up chicken wing on the floor. A deal gone sour?

Brown Sugar is suppose to open today!

Brown Sugar is suppose to open today!

Cue Bar has opened as of Wednesday. Kitchen not yet open but we have beer and pool. Thanks for the interest.
Scott.

Word is "That Custard Place in Del Ray" is "The Dairy Godmother". Someone said the window has been changed? Ok... a name that does not suck as much.
