Zap! Boom! Pow!
Late last week marked the grand opening of Fantom Comics, purveyor of comic books, graphic novels, figurines and the like. The small boutique is located in the commercial development above the Tenleytown-AU Metro stop (map), alongside Best Buy and The Container Store. With the opening, Tenleytown will now become an attractive destination for Washington geeks, who can hit Best Buy for all their computer and videogaming needs, pick up some X-Men figurines at Fantom Comics, and then stop by The Container Store for some durable storage bins to file away the heaps of women's phone numbers they will have surely amassed by then.
In all seriousness, we are glad to see such a store open in our city at time when the comic book industry has been in a nasty decline. Fantom will be competing with fellow Northwest comic book shops Another Universe and Big Planet Comics. But both of those stores are in Georgetown. Metro accessibility and the free one hour of garage parking that Fantom provides may give the new store an edge. We aren't sure how they managed to afford a space in a building otherwise filled by large department stores and luxury condominiums, but we congratulate them on an excellent location and wish them the best of luck. For store news, including convenient inventory updates, check their website.

A story about comics titled "Zap! Boom! Pow!"?
How very...1985.
Still, good news about a new store. Can the DC area support another one? Big Planet is one of the best comix stores in the *country*, let alone DC.
Someone else has beaten me to the comment about the silly headline so I shall point out that Another Universe hasn't existed in about five years. Beyond Comics however is in the Georgetown area although I believe it was recently sold. Also if you were a savvy comic shop owner and focused on graphic novels and manga your business has been quite good. The nasty decline is for the dingy little shops that pushed varient covers and back issues.
That said, I'm thrilled there is another store in the DC area. I think there is plenty of business around for a good store - particularly one close to a university.
Wait... what do you mean Another Universe doesn't exist? I just walked past it the other week. On Wisconsin Avenue. Did it change names or something? Am I going nuts?
And the title was intentionally dumb, I didn't mean to offend.
Another Universe in Georgetown became Beyond Comics, which is now called "Big Monkey Comics", or something like that. So, you walked past the right location, but it has endured several name changes over the years...
Yes, it is now Big Monkey Comics (see www.bigmonkeycomics.com for more info).
