The Next Big Thing: Largo?
An ad on the back of an Express last week caught our eye. While at first it looked like like an advertisement for any other residential condominium development near a Metro station, the precise station caught our eye. "Live Vibrant. Live Stylish. Live Largo."
Yup, Largo Town Center, the Blue Line's new terminus station.
The developers explained that thanks to "great access to work and play" and a "myriad of amenities" there was "nowhere else like Largo." The development, Midtown at Largo Station, is advertising new condominiums from $250,000 and up.
Some snooping confirmed our suspicion this was the first transit-oriented development at the Largo station. The Stationmasters' page shows the Boulevard at Capital Centre as the only commercial development in the area, but with sprawling parking lots designed with cars in mind. The Metro station and shopping center are so new they aren't even in Google's aerial imagery of the area.
Although we concede the long list of tenants at the shopping center might constitute a "myriad" of amenities, the station is 30 minutes from downtown Washington and ensconsed in an otherwise suburban setting. Will Largo Station be a hub of development with condos piled on top of condos? We're not sure, but with condos previewing in the $200s we expect they'll have plenty of inquiries.

Largo's a great neighborhood to buy drugs or get shot, it borders lovely Seat Pleasant, and the town center is the best place i know of to get carjacked.
where do i inquire about information on over-priced, cheaply built condos with high forclosure rates in bad sprawling neighborhoods with contrived and manufactured towncenters?
Hrm...that site looks suspiciously similar to midtownalexandria.com; the site for the condos they're building at the Huntington end of the Yellow line.
It looks like the midtownalexandria.com site because both sets of condos are being built by the same company.
Google's satellite picture of DC is at least 3 years old. Check out any relatively new construction project...starting with the kennedy warren.

LOL, I knew someone just HAD to say something bad about PG county. Congratulations on being the first one. Go back to Farifax.
Obviously you haven't been to Largo or you would know that its a thriving middle class neighborhood with nice families and young professionals. Just like the ones in Fairfax.
I gotta agree with DCLa - it's too easy & predictable to bash Largo and PG in general. Being thirty minutes from downtown is considered a drawback? For a DC suburb that is pretty fine, especially when you have a metro station at your doorstep. Largo borders Seat Pleasant? Yeah like Capitol Hill borders Barry Farms - sort of, but there's enough in between (the Beltway) to make it irrelevant. I think someone needs to get out of Adams Morgan /Mt Pleasant / Columbia Heights a little more often.

actually, i've lived in pg county all my life, my parents are PG county public school teachers, and I currently reside in the small town of riverdale, home of the record breaking 155th murder in pg county, 4 murders in 3 months, and last month's gang rape.
all im saying is that moving to a pre-fab neighborhood built around a "town-center" or what i think is a well manicured strip mall, is a bad idea. this concept didnt work 30 years ago with PG Plaza and the Hyattsville area, has increased crime 100% in Bowie over the past 4 years, and will not make largo a better place to be.
the only reason largo could be confused for a "thriving middle class neighborhood" is perhaps because of the gated million dollar homes in gated woodmore, but even that's mitchellville, and still no great area.
face it, PG county is not a good place to live, has rediculously high crime rates, and rediculously poor school systems.
as far as fairfax goes though, you couldnt pay me to live on the otherside of those bridges.

six flags does not a good neighborhood make

i often eat lunch at the blvd at cap centre.
it's ghetto.

Yeah, I got that. I find it difficult to believe that there's such a huge market for $250k+ condos in either location. But hey, I've never understood real estate.
Let's also not forget that a hospital/condo/shopping (yeah... that makes sense) megaplex is soon coming to Landover.
robstyles , PG County can be a great place to live. I've lived here all my 28 years. If you hate it, you have two real options:
1. Move to Calvert or St. Mary's counties. It seems like every white family (w/kids under 18) did this from 1987 - 1995.
2. Buck up & vote the functionally-retarded county officials out.
"I find it difficult to believe that there's such a huge market for $250k+ condos in either location."
I don't know enough about Largo to comment on that... as for Huntington, while I agree $250K sounds high for that 'hood (I paid less in Arlington, a couple years ago), have you looked at prices closer in these days? There has to be some place to go for people who get priced out of $300K-$400K one bedrooms in Arlington and DC...
i know im late, but as a resident of the county who lived in largo and now lives in landover, i have to set somebody straight.
largo=clean+safe+middle class
riverdale=dirty+sketchy+blue collar
me=right
you=wrong
Okay, I'm a little late and it appears that the party is over, but I was hoping I could get some intellegent feedback about the new development Midtown at Largo. I've been looking for condos in alexandria, DC, and Arlington, and with the exception of a certain 'element' Midtown seems like a pretty good deal based on the price...not to mention it's steps from metro. Based on the Demographics the median HH income ranges from 80-90k ( middle class well to do ) But it seems like I hear the same thing in the DC and Alexandria regarding those sketchy elements. I get a pretty consistent opinion about arlington (pentagon row) where I currently rent, but the price to own is bananas!! but again..it's a great area. Based on the feedback and in comparison to other areas I'm wondering if Largo can hold its own and sustain or groww in value.
Mitchellville is even bader than Largo. Some parts of mitchellville look like seat pleasant and some look like Bowie. Thats the truth. Do u agree people.

Hey, Every one I happend to stumble on this page looking for a leace space for my current commerical client.I read and read and read, what is the big deal OK its PG and some folks may have issue with that fact. Let me be clear I moved to PG @ 15 years when my mom moved the 2 of us from Capital Hill to own a house!! Adjustment was not the word but I did, and now with the new developments and the proposed developments I have hope for the county. Yes I now see myself here for life good or bad.
PG is a unique place it is African Amreican in majority and also it does have some issue in some places.I myself was gay bashed right here in this county and it hard for me some times to deal with certain issues that this county faces but as a proud AF I feel and have seen that there are no other places that has the feel or community vaulues as PG. I think PG is open to all citizens of the DC metro area if they would like to give it a shot.I'm not sure if ghetto is the word becouse there are tragic things happening even in the most exclusive parts of town(IE NW,Montgomery & Fairfax)I would say that in some parts of PG you need to wear your urban hat. Race is a factor for some people an THATS OK!! I guess all I ask of you guys is to not judge to soon time tells all. Hope every one had a happy and fruitful Holiday Thanks for reading.
Dion.
