Mapping the Mayor's Accomplishments
If a picture is worth 1000 words, then an interactive map must be worth 10,000. Well, at least that's the thinking in the mayor's office.
Today D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams introduced a new way for residents to better envision how the city around them is changing -- an interactive map highlighting accomplishments in 14 policy areas over the course of 2005, from economic development to employment to education. In a statement, Williams noted, "This interactive map provides District residents a tangible overview of the improvements we’ve made in their neighborhoods on a broad range of issues. The map does a great job of outlining the significant strides that we made together in 2005, both citywide and in individual communities. It also shows how we’re paving the way for continued success in the future."
This is a cool idea, in step with a generation that needs to see everything in Google Map format or something similar. We 'd like to see it updated to reflect some recent changes, though. After all, a huge "No Smoking" sign over the map of the District would look pretty snazzy.

This might be useful if any of the icons were actually ward or neighborhood specific.
All the icons I looked at were generic "achievements" and not specific to the community where it's identified. Not everythign in Ward 8 lines up with Ward 8 accomplishments. So the seemingly even distribution doesn't mean much to this reader.
I am glad I am not the nly one who thought this was generally useless information. I too would have preferred that the icons line up with specific achivements, such as renovated school, successfuly business initiatives, renovated firehouse, etc.
Yeah, the map seems to be just a pointless gimmick that's completely irrelevant to most of the items presented.
And apparently the mayor has accomplished nothing in Ward 3 (no white circles there). Then again, it's probably the ward least in need of anything.

what's the estimated production cost for this ego massage and who's paying for it?
I actually got a bit excited about this, but then I come to find out that its not based on your locality. Blah! Try again Mr. Williams ... maybe you can work on the parking issue while your at it.
A close look shows the Mayor did nothing for my ward, Ward 3 - AKA THE PEOPLE WHO GOT HIM ELECTED!!!! Thanks for nothing.
Nothing for Ward 3? Have you checked your post bubble-burst home values? You are still way ahead my friend. There should be "$$$$" all over the maps where housing prices doubled, tripled? Maybe cents signs (if anyone know how to get them) for the overlooked areas - hellooo...northeast.
