Stay Out of Trouble, Marion!

Marrion Barry is Happy Image.JPGMarion Barry must be breathing a sigh of relief. Screw that -- he must be ready to throw himself a huge party full of, well, you know.

Barry dodged 18 months in prison this morning for six years of evading his taxes, sentenced instead to three years of probation and $246,000 in back taxes, not to mention interest and penalties. He will also have to submit to regular drug tests, so gone might be his better days on the District's party scene. The Post described the scene in the courtroom, where Barry apologized to the judge for his actions:

"To this court, I apologize," Barry said in a low voice that nevertheless carried throughout the packed but silent federal courtroom. "Deeply sorry. To the citizens of the District of Columbia, I apologize."
But more than that, Barry painted himself as a man of God:
He described himself as a Christian who believes in forgiveness, and he reminded the court of the verses in the Book of Matthew, chapter 18, when Paul asks how many times a person should be forgiven, and Jesus answers "70 times seven."
We don't want to point this out, Marion, but Jesus' forgiveness isn't infinite. Reading the passage literally, he only said forgiveness should be granted 490 times -- and you've already used up a good chunk of those.

Stay strong, Marion, but first try and stay clean.

Total BS. This guy ain't gonna learn unless he gets jail time. What an example for his community.

Jonny. He *did* jail time. Followed by getting re-elected. Ad infinitum.

Jonny, this guy has already seen jail time. I don't see this leopard changing his spots any time soon. He's 70 years old, afterall. I think he feels as if he's above the law because he was a champion of the poor residents of the city, while dragging the rest of the city into the gutter. His sense of entitlement disgusts me. And what disgusts me even more is that the people of Ward 8 will continue to elect him as long as he wants to run, all the while maintaining their stance that he was set up by the white devil.

Marion Barry is a master of playing the martyr and using discrimination as a smoke screen to mask his illegal activites and shortcomings in character.

And the sad thing is, he IS an example to a certain demographic of the community. They see that there is no need to take responsibility for their actions. He never does. He simply blames someone or something else, be it the "bitch" who set him up, the white establishment who's trying to keep him down, or his addiction.

Does anyone know anything about the judge who sentenced him? I wonder if there was some cronyism at play here.

Is it possible to give Ward 8 back to Maryland?

It was a federal judge, so I would assume that would lessen the opportunity for any cronyism.

Thanks for the clarification, Mike B. Although I love how you don't even rule it out, saying, "that would lessen the opportunity for any cronyism."

I wouldn't put anything past this guy.

It was a federal Magistrate Judge Deb Robinson who has no obligation of pay back to Barry who made the decision. She is normally easy going when she is allowed to be under the sentancing guidelines.

OH HAPPY DAY
WHEN
JESUS WASHED MARION BARRYS SINS AWAY

The Democratic Party needs to put Mr. Barry out to pasture. He's an embarrassment to the District of Columbia - whose government is already an embarrassment.

One thing that is being overlooked here is that Barry also did not pay his DC taxes along with his Federal taxes. Can you imagine, the former Mayor and current Councilmember, not paying taxes owed to the municipality that employs him? This is ridiculous; the city should garnish his wages on the order of 50% or more until at least his DC taxes are paid up.

If everybody looks closely, almost every member of the city council has pulled one shady stunt after another with their taxes or something else. Let us not just jump on Barry but remember Jack Evans, Fenty, Cropp and down the line have been the center of attention on money problems.

See these guys are proof we need a better educational system as they just do not add up!

FWIW, actually it was Peter who asked Jesus how many times he should forgive, thinking he was very generous in suggesting 7 times. And then Jesus ups the ante on him. And the point is to forgive *interpersonal* offenses repeatedly. Judges and tax evasion, is of course a different deal.

He should have been put in stocks outside St Ex so the nu-washingtonians could pelt him with Chimay bottles.

Chalk up another "win" for that arrogant racist SOB. I wish marionberry would keel over from an overdose allready so he can stop hogging any more publicity. Sick sick sick of it

His lack of accountability reminds me SO much of our Smirking Chimp in the White House. But marionberry was on the political scene well before Dumbya. Guess King Georgie stole some pages from marionberry's excuse book!

After reading this week's loose lips on the bullying treatment by Barry on a female DC Gov employee, I think that he is really greedy creepy jerk. I have no respect or sympathy for the guy. What a sad sack loser.
