The Idiotarod in Pictures

It was under sunny skies and in unseasonable weather that some 132 daring individuals on 22 teams ran around the District looking and acting like fools on Saturday. In short, a good start to what is to become an annual D.C. tradition -- the Idiotarod. We could have stopped by and interviewed racers. We could have. But pictures are worth a thousand words, and thanks to the camera work of DCist Editor-at-Large Rob Goodspeed and other photographers, these pictures speak volumes.

The IDIOTAROD was an amazing day!!!!!
We salute the brilliance and energy of every single racer and friend who ran, walked, drank, decorated, chanted and cheered: 22 teams, 132 racers, bazillions of gawkers, 5 bars, 1,877,655,432 brain cells gone and never coming back.....
Big thanks to all the people who helped it come together: The SMASHED Board (smashed.geekpad.com) and Friends for all of the behind the scenes work and commitment to asinine fun; All the listservs, blogs, media and related that spread the word and helped round up a great group; The Front Page, Fox and Hounds, Rumors, Adams Mill and Tom Tom for providing libations as required, and allowing us to make sidewalk viewing the best in the city; All legitimate cart owners around the area who "lent" so many carts; the DCPD for laughing at and with us, and not giving us a hard time!
We thank you. The Arlington Food Assistance Center thanks you.
Mark you calendars for the 2007 DC Idiotarod (first Saturday in March, 2007).
Look for news about our June Amazing Race/ Scavenger Hunt. If you’d like to get on our mailing list for other fun events, just send an email to dcsmashed-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
Hi Lead Idiot, great job raising money for a good cause. I was out and about Saturday and saw many teams running around Dupont and Adams Morgan and thought it looked like a lot of fun.
One question: what are we local residents supposed to do with the decorated shopping carts that have been abandoned on the sidewalks in Adams Morgan?
Sorry, Mike, I didn't realize that many were left. Most teams took them back home with them, I thought. I was prepared to get any stray carts back to at least a safeway, but didn't see any out front by the time I left... is there a particular location where they were deposited?
I'm on it. will take care of carts.
There were a couple left by the Kokopooli's building at 18th and Kalorama. If you know what to do with them it'd be much appreciated since I don't think they can just be thrown in the dumpster.
It seems like some synergy here, you could give the old shopping carts to homeless people to keep their belongings in.
(yes I realize that is insensitive)
Is that what was going on? I was walking up 18th street on Sat. afternoon and almost got flattened by a bunch of loons pushing a shopping cart. It looked like fun, though.
The Idiotrod was a fun way to get out and act like a fool. My team also took advantage of the opportunity to promote our personal dream. Pete and Chris Magnuson are trying to get on The Amazing Race 10. We need your help. Visit our site: http://www.pickpeteandchris.com and if you like what you see, write a quick message to CBS telling them to pick us. Then spread the word to as many people as possible.
In case you're wondering...our shopping cart was a rocket so that we could rocket Pete and Chris onto The Amazing Race!
Thanks
UPDATE: all stray carts were moved. I personally asked permission from Marie Reed community center, and they accepted them gladly for use. Sorry if they were an eyesore. We do try to be responsible citizens!
Thanks for taking care of the carts! And, again, great job supporting local charity org. I'll mark the event on my calendar for next year.
