The Argument

2005_1108_flag.jpgSo, this morning we told you all about Lincoln Ross' potential District anthem. Now, as suggested in the comments, we're going to take a vote. Here are the nominees:

"Come to Washington," by Lincoln Ross.

"Chocolate City," by Parliament.

"Washington, DC," by Magnetic Fields.

"Washington, DC," by Johnny Cohen.

"Rock Creek Park," The Blackbyrds.

"Bustin' Loose," by Chuck Brown

"DC Will Do That To You," by Smart Went Crazy.

"DC Fight Song," by Federal City Five

"Come Down to DC," by Army of Me.

All right, what do you think?

For some reason the Rock Creek Park link is mixed up. You have to click on the song entitled: "The More I Get The More I Want" to actually hear Rock Creek Park. But it's worth it.

Write in candidate - "911 is a Joke".

Banned in DC- Bad Brains

"The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" --- Postal Service.

Is today "What do you think" day on DCist? Nearly every post has ended with "what do you think" or some version of it.

"The Girl is Mine" - Michael Jackson

None of the nominees tops Nation of Ulysses' "You're My Miss Washington, D.C."

Man, where were you guys an hour ago? We're going to have to add a second bracket.

Gawd.. who picked that Federal City Five song? That track sucks. Sounds like it was written by teenagers.

"Bustin' Loose," by Chuck Brown is the best choice. Not only is written and performed by a DC native but it is in a genre that is also uniquely DC.

why are the polls ending so early? I try to vote and it says "this poll is finished" but only 30 people voted....

dc fight song is a great choice. written by an all female band who all live in dc.

keep the polls open!

You're my miss washington, dc.

hands down.

Now if DC Fight Song was written by all males, it would suck balls. But because it was written by an all female band, it passes as good? Bah!

doin it in the park, doin it after dark, oh yeah.

that song is so much better than any of the other junk on that list it's not even fair. it's already a classic beyond d.c.-- so let's go with what works instead of some new school garbage that doesn't even stand out in the punk/alterna-awesome scene. just because you write a song with "DC" in it, doesn't mean you should be nominated. If that IS the case, I vote for all songs by D.O.C.

john

i didn't say it was good because it was written by women.

i said it was good and then stated the fact it was written by women. just giving a little history that's all.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T NOMINATE THE GOD-AWFUL "XMAS EVE IN WASHINGTON" !!!! WHAT SENTIMENTAL UNREALISTIC TRIPE !!!!! IT'S OVERPLAYED ON THE RADIO EVERY DECEMBER - HATE IT !!!!!!

I know it's not about the DC area, but what about "(Don't go back to) Rockville" by REM. It sort of hints at the whole suburbs/city argument that we can't seem to do away with.

Magnetic Fields for me

Magnetic Fields, victorious? Over Parliament or Chuck Brown?! It's official, this site should be retitled Indie-est or Whitie-ist. Nuts to this.

Thank you, Rob Byrd. I listen to Rock Creek Park several times a week. It's just hands down the best song ever written about DC. NPR called it one of the best songs of summer ever. I demand a recount. Oh yeah. Recount. Oh yeah.

It's too late now, but I'd nominate "Mt. Pleasant" by Tuscadero in the best song written about a DC neighborhood category.

Or Mt. Pleasant Isn't by the Evens

"Walter Reed" by Michael Penn is pretty good, though I guess soon enough it'll be referring ro Bethesda.

Goddamned right about that, Lane.

(The TypeKey, she is broken).

What, nobody suggested "Afternoon Delight?"

i like magnets.

i like the magnetic fields.

I'm appalled that Chocolate City or anything by Chuck Brown didn't win. Appalled. I've never even heard of Magnetic Fields. Maybe I just live in the wrong part of town.

The Junkyard Band wrote "Loose Booty."

Another song that should have been nominated - that 911 joint, "I'm a drink all the brown, and all the white, Sunday night, Tradewinds y'all." Maybe that'll win when we vote for a PG County anthem.

DC's anthem has to be a go-go song! Although I did listen to that Magnetic Fields song and it was pretty cool. Maybe if we got Chuck Brown to do a rendition, then we'd all be happy! And dcist, if you're gonna do these polls, give us time to vote!

I vote for Chuck Brown -- especially his rockin' DC Lottery ad with those really awful dancers in front of Ben's Chili Bowl. That's the quintessential Washington experience right there. :)

does most of pavement's 'brighten the corners' just remind me of d.c., or is it really talking about d.c.? but my vote would have to go to pfunk/chocolate city.

69 Love Songs (Magnetic Fields) may be the album that you could most listen to on repeat forever ... but Washington D.C. is the only bad song on it.

"District Divided" by Darkest Hour.

'crazy town' by silver spring's velocity girl
