Weekly Music Agenda
MONDAY
>> "It" band of the month Arctic Monkeys are headlining a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club with Delaware’s eccentric pop ensemble Spinto Band. Fear not, though. NPR.org is webcasting the show starting at 8:30 p.m. as part of its ever growing and always impressive concert series. So gather around the laptop with the kids, and listen to the latest "greatest U.K. rock band of all time" play in our very own backyard.
>> Quirky locals The Caribbean will be doing their thing at DC9 with D.C.’s Pagoda and zZz, an organ/drum duo from Amsterdam. It really makes you wonder how somebody in Amsterdam came up with the idea of an organ and drum duo. Jokes aside, expect to be blown away by what looks like a terrific lineup. $8.
>> The D.C. Music Community is presenting “From the Beltway to the Bayou” with Eric Hilton from Thievery Corporation, Kid Gusto and More. The benefit is part of a fundraiser by Habitat for Humanity International and New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity aimed at building housing for displaced New Orleans musicians. 5 p.m., Local 16, 1602 U Street NW.
TUESDAY
>> D.C.-based The Bonapartes join The Oranges Band at Black Cat’s backstage for a night of rock. Maybe it’s the flashbacks from our European history class talking, but we’d like to think that these bands were booked together to give history buffs a chuckle. $5, 9 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
>> If you miss New York-based new wave hipsters Stellastarr* and U.K.’s Editors (pictured) at the 9:30 Club at 7 p.m., catch the official after-party at DC9, hosted by Electrotease. Don’t forget to dress completely in black and maintain a permanent look of contemplation. Tickets to the 9:30 Club show are $15; the DC9 after party is $5. One lucky winner could be going to the show courtesy of DCist Kyle, if you know your stuff.
THURSDAY
>> Now, the Lucky Bastards, there's a name no man would self-apply where we come from. Maybe it’s sarcasm. We can’t tell. But they are playing DC9 with fellow D.C. rockers The Sentiment and The Object Lesson. $7.
>> They may not be storming the charts as the Arctic Monkeys are, but for our money Hard Fi's Stars of CCTV is the Brit band of the moment. At the Black Cat, 8:30 p.m., $12.
FRIDAY
>> D.C.’s Margot Macdonald, winner of the Young Artist Award category in the 2005 Mid Atlantic Song Contest, will be belting out some tunes at Staccato with the Maryland-based bands Never Ender and Quiet Marshall and D.C. frat rockers Just Like Always. $7, 8 p.m.
>> It’s time to travel back to a more innocent era, when electronica flourished and European DJs roamed the earth, tossing single upon single at the American public in the hopes of becoming the next big thing. Yes, we’re talking about the ‘90s. British pioneers of that era, the ORB -- not to be confused with Orbital -- will be spinning some of their hits at the 9:30 Club when they present “OKIE DoKIE It'S THE OrB ON A MeRRY CAR TOuR ‘06.” We’re not exactly sure what a merry car has to do with it, but we’ve heard the Los Angeles show was a blast. $25.
SATURDAY
>> Raleigh-based death metal band Daylight Dies will be bringing on the doom with an album release party at RFD Washington, 810 7th Street NW. Leave your puppies and kittens at home. Although, we’re not sure why you would bring small animals to a bar, you irresponsible fool. FREE, 9 p.m.
>> D.C.’s Nethers (pictured) are bringing their unique brand of folksy rock to the DC Arts Center with Donny Hue and the Colors. Nethers are fresh off a U.S. tour, and we're quite excited to welcome them home. The show is all ages. $6, 10 p.m.
>> lf you're feeling slightly darker, take on the Black Cat's mainstage for the band touted as Prince meets Interpol. LA duo She Wants Revenge, playing with New York's Nightmare of You and Houston's Astra Heights. 9:30 p.m., $15.
SUNDAY
>> We know that Sunday is typically a day of rest, but if you’ve got a hankerin’ for some great music, Baltimore’s Private Eleanor is bringing their elaborate pop ensemble to the Galaxy Hut, with Sarah Azzara and Ganesh.

Billy Bragg @ Birchmere tonight! Anyone go last night?
the birchmere is the lamest venue i have ever been to. it looks like the inside of the wild west saloon at 6 flags. i expected robot cowboys to become animated and take me on a semi-guided tour. sound isnt particularly good either, ive been there twice and both times there was annoying mic feedback and buzz.
Erin Mckeown at the Birchmere on Thursday!
I like the Birchmere--it's small and people aren't smoking, and I've never had any problem with the sound. The decor may be a little silly, but so long as it's a good place to hear good music, I'm willing to overlook a certain amount of cheesiness.
also, don't forget dcist favorites The Hard Tomorrows, tonight at the black cat backstage!
Good call, ann. I was just going to post that.
DC's own Middle Distance Runner at IOTA on saturday. Come on DCIST, this has to be a little more important than some death metal band out of Raleigh. Jeez.
You link to the Caribbean's site is broken.

Exactly. Last time MDR had a show, you guys pushed a sold-out comedy show and a daytime art exhibit. Now it's death metal. Come on!
Middle Distance Runner DOES play good music. If you can get the chorus of 'Naturally' out of your head for a week after you hear it, you're a better man than I.
Also, if you want some high-quality synth-rock without the stigma of Fred Durst's approval, cross She Wants Revenge off your calendar and go see the Sad Lives Of The Hollywood Lovers tonight at Iota.
that's okay, Matt... death metal and sold out comedy shows are important, too. remember, we need to love and hug and snuggle platonically with all art, even if it doesn't make any sense to us.
and besides - we were lucky these events didn't occur the same week, let alone the same time! just imagine if there was a sold out death metal comedy show!! wait - don't do that... i think if you do that you will turn into pure energy, and that's not good for you.
Margot and The Nuclear So & So's will be at the 9:30 Club on Thursday -8pm- with South
and Something for Rockets. Margot and The Nuclear So & So's are a great band that I guarentee you will hear more about in the next few months...this should be an awesome show.
Ah, we were remiss in not mentioning tonight's Black Cat show. Both the Hard Tomorrows and Greenland are outstanding. Don't miss it.
MDR, we're not trying to submarine you, we promise. And as always, we welcome additions to our suggestions in the comments.
While I am delighted to read on DCist of an electronic music event taking place at the 9:30 club, DCist failed to mention the other electronic music event at 9:30 this weekend: Roni Size (London, UK), DJ Marky (Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Bobby Jae (DC) will be spinning some of the freshest drum & bass in the world. It should be slammin!
it's no big deal. we like submarines, anyway! esp. ones with salami in them... except me, i'm a vegetarian... i don't care much for salami.
also nuclear subs are pretty awesome.
I checked out that doom thing off their myspace page. Thanks for posting something different... DC is all about the diversity. I'll be there!
How can we forget about the indie darlings, Eisley, playing tomorrow night at the 930?
Hold up, how come you're advertising a death-metal band from raleigh when you have DC's own Darkest Hour playing their first headline show at the 9:30 Club on Saturday with A Life Once Lost & Himsa. I know most of the DCist crowd doesn't care for metal, but I think some priority should be given to the DC bands in the Weekly Music Agenda, especially when they're making significant strides in their careers.
Recently, got the Private Eleanor CD and would highly recommend it for fans of early Belle & Sebstaine... I dig MDR but will be off to Baltimore for the Pale Stars CD release party..
Wow Matt, way to focus on our band name instead of the fact that 3 great DC bands are sharing a stage together for $7.
The Sentiment show on thursday is the first time they're playing with their new bassist. That show is also the Object Lesson's debut on the DC scene period. I'm goin'.
sentiment are cool, who is this new bassist.
sentiment are cool, who is this new bassist
you can always count on a good dose of unnecessary anger in the comments thread to this post every week. why do people take it as such a personal affront if their band/favorite band isn't listed/doesn't have something nice said about them? it's one person's opinion on some interesting shows going on around town over a single week. that's it. chill out, folks.
Although I'd never dump out any anger, I can sympathize with why people get a bit jacked up over the Weekly Music Agenda. DCist very clearly has a tendency towards doing just a certain kind of music (indie rock). The site being called DCist and the fact that the other _ist sites cover a pretty wide range of musical scenes, makes some people feel like a lot more should be covered.
which isn't really DCists fault. it's like a handful of people who have their own specialized tastes and a limited amount of time.
There are, however, a LOT of other scenes in the city, some of them wonderfully vibrant and bringing in great and exciting talent. My own pet project--the local techno scene--has been notable for bringing in some of the most innovative and original acts in electro.
given time though, i'm sure the site will diversify. :-)
Hello! There's a whole separate section for classical music. Maybe if someone were to start writing a separate section for hip-hop, or for dance music, or for doom/grindcore, or for pop-punk, there would be less bitching? Yes? No? Maybe so? DC has a pretty notable indie rock scene. There's a gajillion bands/clubs/collectives/message-boards dedicated to it. It would be weird if DCist didn't give it the column inches they do. But they throw in country and hip-hop and electronic and dj sets and jazz as well.
I think it's perfect. Don't ever change, you guys.
Matt, thanks for the plug for Private Eleanor! You should come out to Galaxy Hut on Sunday too, if you're not busy. Also, we should play a show together again sometime soon.
-Chris
Haha, I was trying to be slick and work some HTML in there, but it ain't tryin' to work for me.

Hope to see some of you folks on Sunday.
