Click Click: Local Bands at the Black Cat

    IMG_2363.JPG

DCist loves our indie rock, especially that of the D.C.-area variety. So when the Black Cat was good enough to book three local bands on Saturday, we were there, cameras in tow.

Openers Georgie James played a great set for what was only their second local gig. Their performance with Joggers a few weeks back was uneven if not promising, so they have obviously been practicing since then. Saturday's performance was much more confident and poised; it's clear they are getting more comfortable playing their songs in front of what are becoming increasingly bigger audiences. Standout tunes for me included "Cheap Champagne", "Cheap Comfortable Headphones" and "More Lights." If they keep this up, soon they'll be writing about more expensive libations and audio gear.

We had never caught The Soft Complex before Saturday but were impressed with their Radio 4-meets-the-Pet-Shop-Boys-if-Paul Heaton-was-their-lead-singer vibe. It wasn't until we perused their MySpace page that we found out the band has ex-members of Burning Airlines and Phaser, but they already had plenty of cool points from us, because any band with a cello in it is OK in our book. Their perfomance went over quite well, if the scattered groups of people dancing were any indication.

Veteran scenesters Exit Clov took the energy level in the room even higher at the end of the night with their sugary-sweet, bouncey, indie-pop. The hour was late by the time they went on, so we snapped a few last pictures, chatted with some friends and soon made our way home, but all in all, Saturday was a pretty good night for D.C. music.

After the jump, a few more pics of the night.

Does anyone know if "Exit Clov" is a Beckett reference?

    It is.

Joggers opened for Georgie James at the backstage, not the other way around.

Right you are. I stand corrected.

    The song is 'Comfortable Headphones'.

John Davis (formerly of Q and Not U, currently of Georgie James) is -- far and away -- my favorite D.C. musician.

Short, sweet, to the point, no hyperbole. I know exactly what I missed, and who sounds like what. Great writeup.

Here's a Hint: Another good review review. I say bravo. Keep it up.

great point, Chaz ... HaH, I really appreciate your review, I know exactly what I missed if I didn't read the actual post and it comes with your stamp of approval .... could you review more posts, por favor?

Generally, when a snake eats its tail, it doesn't get all the way back around and start to engorge its own head. Thank you, HaH, Chaz, and PD, for making that possible. I hope to see more commentary that blurs the lines between physics and philosophy in the future. Great work.

    Excellent comment, Gabriel!
