Photo of the Day: April 17, 2006

PotD041706.jpg

Lots of animals in the photo pool today, but this shot from Flickr user brownpau takes the cake for its unique point of view. Runner up and definitely also worth a mention is this shot taken by maxedaperture. Creepy.

Brownpau's shot was taken with a Canon PowerShot A400. You can find the EXIF data here.

Thanks, though personally I was more enamored with this cute little nutmuncher.

ok, let's see how many DCist photographers I can piss off today!

Damn you kyle, I can't believe you did that. how could you? So not right.

i'm with epmd.

now, if this was an R.O.D. feature, it would make sense.

This is much more interesting than a crushed beer can on the street, although I'd prefer to see less sidewalk and more bushy tail. And there's a thing in Photoshop called "auto contrast" that would do wonders for this nut crusher.

i enjoy the POTD and i've been surprised by all the negative and mean-spirited comments. my suggestion is that people not take it so seriously or be offended if their photos aren't chosen. it's just a good way to feature fun and interesting shots on a regular basis.

Catherine, I didn't say anything mean but as a photographer I have my opinion/critique about each shot that is put up. A lot of them are kind of cool! This IS a unique viewpoint of a squirrel but the cropping, color, and contrast could be better, that's all.

i should have clarified - i didn't think this thread was particularly mean or anything (i didn't see your comment, Pix, before i commented), and i think some critiques are definitely interesting. a few other POTD threads got pretty out of hand, though, in my opinion. i just don't see the need to be petty on a fun feature that a lot of people enjoy.

Pix - I went with your Photoshop advice, and upped the saturation and sharpness a bit. Update photo on Flickr can be seen here. The slanted offset POV I keep to preserve the spontaneity of the moment.

Normally, I upload my photos as-is, straight after Import into iPhoto, simply because I used to spend waaaay too much time in Photoshop agonizing over cropping and enhancing my photos, running each one through an array of batch actions which ultimately destroyed the essence -- and EXIF data! -- of each image. Finally I said enough is enough, and stopped meticulously photoshopping each and every image, which encouraged me to focus more on details like composition and framing while shooting the photo at the time itself.

Love the POD, great angles, perspective and subject- and the PS advice given by pix was right on. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture. The adjusted shot is much better.

For the record, I totally agree with Catherine. I don't care if you NEVER award me a PotD...but I just think the section will be the most fun for the most people by keeping the restrictions down and just encouraging people to post DCist photos to Flickr however works for them. For example, on a weekend when someone has a friend in from out-of-town and does touristy stuff, they'll probably take a whole bunch more than 3 good DCist-worthy pics...and I for one would like to see them all.
