Megalomania Meets Maki

photo of sushi by ILBOverfishing. Mercury. Enslaved fishermen. There are enough ideological pitfalls to sushi consumption already. So when we read Martin's post earlier today, it made us sad. We just want some eel and spicy tuna rolls; not to support a crazy cultleader's bid for world domination via the seafood market. Judging from the comments on the original post, many of you feel the same way.

So DCist Nicole and I made a quick phone survey of some local sushi restaurants and asked which of them bought their supplies from the good reverend's True World Group supply company. Our harried, informal, and unconfirmed results:

  • Cafe Asia used to buy from TWG, but no longer do so. They declined to explain why they made the switch.

  • Tono Sushi does indeed roll Unification Church Uramaki — they say their experience with TWG has been "pretty good," and that they stick with them because of the quality of service, not because Moon's dreams of sushi monopoly have come to fruition. They also said they had "no idea" about the company's ties to the church.

  • Spices also uses TWG, but only rarely; they tell us that most of their fish comes from New York. They said they only turn to TWG when they have to fill a special request or need a particularly quick turnaround on an order.

  • Sushi Ko also uses TWG, and says their experiences have been positive.

  • The same goes for Kaz Sushi Bistro.

We tried a few other DC sushi purveyors as well, but we either didn't get an answer or couldn't find someone who knew whether their restaurant used True World Group as a supplier. If you get a chance to ask about TWG the next time you visit your favorite sushi outlet, consider taking a moment to record what you find out in the comments to this post.

Why I love the DCist: you guys do this kind of research within minutes of reading the article. You're making us lazy!!!

Lazy but well informed... Thanks!!

Thanks for the reporting Tom and Nicole. It's interesting to know about Sushi-Ko for me, as my office is right next door to it and up until relatively recently, they also supplied the take-away sushi available for purchase at the Whole Foods on our block in Glover Park. I used to buy a spicy tuna roll for lunch at this Whole Foods two or three times a month as a treat, as it was totally solid sushi. Then a few months ago, Whole Foods suddenly switched its supplier to a Philly based company called GenjiExpress.

Given that Whole Foods tries pretty hard to maintain its rep as progressive and earth-friendly, I'm curious whether this issue had anything to do with the change. Of course I suppose its possible GenjiExpress also gets its fish from the Moonies, but the take away sushi available at this Whole Foods is now not nearly as good and I stopped buying it, so I'm guessing it is a different supplier. I think I'll ask the Whole Foods manager about this the next time I'm over there.

Thanks for the investigative work!

And it's sad to hear that the sushi at the Glover Park WHole Foods is no longer supplied by Sushi-Ko. That was always my go-to for a quick, fast meal to go.

I was wondering about the Whole Foods sushi link as well. Whole Foods uses GenjiExpress for their Manhattan store and all the other local stores too, so I assumed it was an economy of scale thing, i.e. much easier to get a provider of sushi for all Whole Foods (or mulitple anyway) as opposed to having agreements for local sushi for each single store.

I think that Whole Foods should return to Sushi Ko sushi. Their lip service about local farmers, purveyors, etc.. I've found they're pretty responsive to customer comments, etc.. The WFM on P Street used to stock Sushi Ko stuff too.

Lets rally

OK, screw Sushi Ko if it's moonie-fish. I'm not a huge fan of Cafe Asia, but it's close to work so I'll patronize it. Is someone out there getting me a list of all the sushi restaurants and seafood houses in the area that don't buy from True World Group?? I say we print up wallet-sized lists like all those pussies afaraid of mercury poisoning out there, with a reverse side explaining TWGs connection to the fucking unification cult.

I think I will purchase all of my sushi at the TWG restaurants, since I am glad that Rev. Moon is helping to make the world a better and more peaceful place. And while I'm at it, I'll pick up a copy of the Washington Times.

Anyone know if Sushi Taro on 17th is Moon-free?

Taro was on our list, but we couldn't get anyone on the phone who could answer the question. If anyone has a chance to ask in person, please do.

Why should we be so concerned about where our Sushi comes from... we are never too concerned about where our news comes from?

Soon I will dominate this country with
my brand of sauce, its intoxicating and exotic taste will be stocked in every American home and restaurant. With millions I reap I will be the voice heard across a political platform.

Wait... whats that? you mean there's already a brand called Heinz Ketchup?

Damn I'm late.

Geez. Thanks for ruining sushi for me. I assume Nooshi has the same policy as Spices. I hope Taro doesn't use Rev. Moon sushi.

Freaking cults. Mormons, Scientologists, Moonies. They're all nuts.
