Fictional Characters Support Our Troops, Too
Appearing this afternoon at a Pentagon near you, Gary Sinise will be performing with the Lt. Dan Band as part of the America Supports You program, a “nationwide initiative to showcase and communicate Americans’ support of the Armed Forces,” according to Reuters. We at DCist wish we were joking with the band name, but it really is called the Lt. Dan Band. For those of you not familiar with Lt. Dan, he was Forrest Gump’s alcoholic, paraplegic pal who later made peace with the Vietnam War and his injuries. With our newfound knowledge of the Lt. Dan Band, we wonder if other bands could pop up with names inspired by supporting characters in Robert Zemeckis films. The George McFly Experience? Could be big for Crispin Glover. Or what about Baby Herman's Hermits? Anyway, it sounds like this performance might be closed off to the public (it's in the Pentagon Courtyard). But don’t fear, we’ll let you know as soon as tickets for the 9:30 Club show go on sale (password = CSI:NY).

Dude!! It is 12:30 already where the hell is overheard?!?! How the Fu*& am I supposed to make it through the rest of my friday???
i stumbled upon a lt. dan band concert at the capitol last summer. he sang "proud to be an american". i can't begin to describe the experience, there just aren't enough words.

Crispin Glover has an album out:

He does a cover of "These boots are made for walkin". That boy ain't right.
Since Forrest Gump is a strong bit of right-wing revisionism (to counter the perception of left-wing historical revisionism) the whole thing is perfect synergy!
How can you tell everyone the secret password for pre-sale tickets!? Betraying all the true fans. I worked long and hard to get my name on the email distribution list and now you've gone and made my efforts obsolete.
Thanks a lot.
I was there for this and left right after the SECDEF introduced him and walked off the stage. Gary plays a mean bass. And I have to give Gary props for all that he does to support the soldiers and their families.
Matt,
Yes, it's really a shame that Sinise use his experience training with vietnam vets for his role in forrest gump and his love of music in a positive way. Rather then drawing attention to the thankless job of being a soldier, maybe he should just be a smarmy music critic on a third rate blog, poking fun at other people's efforts to do good in the world, because they happen to be holding a guitar while doing it.
Actually, Lt. Dan was not parapalegic--he just didn't have legs.
p-I think all they were saying is that Lt. Dan Band is a dumb name for a band.
I saw Lt. Dan Band by accident in Chicago. They are borderline christian rock.
