Breaking News: Shots Fired in Capitol Office Building

breaking news.JPGWe're receiving word that shots have been fired inside the Rayburn House Office Building. The whole U.S. Capitol complex is shut down, according to reports on CNN. We'll have more as it breaks.

Update: So it seems to be the sound of shots that have been reported, and in the Rayburn Building's garage. Staff are ordered to shelter in place.

Update II: So it seems that one staff person heard what they thought were gunshots. Police are still trying to establish whether shots were actually fired or not. We'll be the first to throw this out there -- might this be another instance of us security-conscious Washingtonians taking a possible minor breach in security and blowing it out of proportion?

AP reporting that "the sound of gunfire" was reported in the Rayburn garage.

Also there's a firing range in the garage of the Rayburn building.

Have heard this may just be related to firing range.

Has Dick Cheney been accounted for?

Is the voting on immigration reform really that contentious?

TC

It may be that "Dollar Bill" Jefferson is shooting it out with the F.B.I. over the missing $10,000 from his freezer.

If you knew you could get the Friday before Memorial Day off just by saying you "heard" some "shots", wouldn't be tempted?

Sheltering in place doesn't sound much like getting the day off, Emily.

Are you kidding? Sheltering in place is the BEST day off! In fact, I'm going to be sheltering in place all weekend long! Sheltering in place is, in fact, my favorite leisure-time activity, along with "standing around waiting" and "lookin' at stuff."

KFI reports it was an illegal firing shots at Republicans voting on border security.

Shots fired in the parking garage...hello, parking garage...cars...cars backfire and they sound an awful lot like gunshots....darn out-of-town Hill staffers...they really need to learn the difference between a car backfiring and a gunshot...

Here's how dumb the security is. A single anonymous phone call about "shots fired" in a Senate Office Building parking garage can call out a dragnet of police officers and scare a female staffer into a tizzy for which she needs to be hospitalized.

The news conference with the Capitol Police spokesperson is an utter disaster, with her repeating "We got a report of shots fired," or "I don't have that information at this time."

The entire school system of DC is locked down -- even schools located in far-flung areas of the city like Tenleytown which are nowhere near the Capitol!

And yet -- and yet! -- a news crew was able to interview a single truck driver who said his load banged against the side of his truck when he went over a security hump. Where were the security guards on that one?

And there is also a firing range in a "secure" office building!

Absolutely STOOOPAHD!!!!

From a news report:
The U.S. Capitol Police Department's Containment & Emergency Response Team maintains an indoor shooting range in the basement of the Rayburn building, according to the department's Web site.

I don't think just any schmo is going to be in there squeezing off rounds. Therefore, not stoooopahd.
