Gilbertology: Solidarity Edition
Written by DCist contributor Matt Bourque.
More details continue to emerge from the arrest, Saturday night in Miami, of Gilbert Arenas and Awvee Storey. Storey was allegedly blocking traffic and was subsequently arrested for refusing an officer’s request that he move.
It was then that our favorite, mercurial star rushed to his teammate’s defense, exiting his car and walking towards Storey in an attempt to stand beside him. Arenas was arrested after refusing to reenter his vehicle; he was charged with resisting without violence.
We are all for the ideals of solidarity and team-building, as well as the occasional worthy act of civil disobedience, but Arenas’ Gandhi-like intentions were belied by the following quote, made as the officer attempted to arrest him:
You can’t arrest me. I’m a basketball player. I play for the Washington Wizards, and I’m not going to leave my teammate.Logical validity aside, the statement seems a bit presumptuous to us. While posting career highs this season in points and steals per game (29.3 and 2.0, respectively), and entrenching himself as a fan favorite in Washington, it’s safe to assume that in Miami, he hasn’t quite reached “I’m Keith Hernandez” status.

They should have gotten directions beforehand...
Gilbert for President!
Free Gilbert!
Actually, Gilbert can do whatever he wants when he wants it and we will go along with it.
I wish Gilbert had my back when I got arrested...

Arenas disputes the account and the quote:
"Everyone knows me. They know I don't have a cocky personality. I don't use my name to get in trouble and I don't use my name to get out of trouble. That would never come out of my mouth."
