Morning Roundup: Weather Relief Edition

Shadows Image.jpgLast week may have been a prelude to summer humidity, but this week will offer a bit of a respite. According to Capital Weather, we're going to be blessed with weather that doesn't rise far beyond the 70s, though we may have a few showers here and there.

Prisoners Escape, Caught Over Weekend: This DCist wasn't terribly happy with the news that two prisoners accused of murder had escaped from the D.C. jail over the weekend, given that the jail is but six blocks away from the place we call home. But the police did their job, and the two escapees, Ricardo Jones and Joseph Leaks, were caught separately yesterday by police.

Monuments Getting Repairs Over Summer: There is nothing more scenic than a family picture in front of a famous Washington landmark. Well, unless that landmark is hidden behind construction equipment. The Washington Times is reporting that a number of Washington-area monuments are receiving repairs and renovations this summer, including the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the National Zoo.

Homeless to Get Voicemail: An organization is planning on giving 350 homeless men and women throughout the District voicemail service, notes WJLA. The program, sponsored by Community Voice Mail, will offer voicemail as part of a larger plan to allow homeless individuals to more easily secure a job or housing. Some 46,000 people in 37 cities have participated in the program in the last decade.

Briefly Noted: Area crabs on the rise ... District spends millions on special education ... Richmond student suspended for eating cookie ... District inspector accused of taking bribes ... Residents not concerned with Ten Commandments display.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why they don't repair try to repair the monuments during the tourist off-season? Doesn't quite seem to make sense... Why not aim to make the majority of repairs during winter?

JAIL BREAK

Here's the story behind the spin.

DC Councilmember Phil Mendelson, who controls the DC Jail budget, is using the prison escape to grab headlines, raise alarms and insist on an investigation.

The truth is: as Chair of the DC Judiciary Committee he has cut the DC Jail budget during the past two years.

Mendelson is a menace to public safety.

The Goo - Construction work isn't as easy in winter. Some procedures cannot be performed in cold weather, the ground is harder, etc.

I'm kind of surprised to hear there's construction at the Lincoln Memorial. I always thought that all that scaffolding, fencing, and other eyesores were just part of the memorial, because they've been there the entire seven years I've lived here. I thought it was just there to match the look of the Jefferson Memorial.

Is anyone else excited that we'll be able to get in touch with our homeless friends easier?

Area crabs on the rise

Tell me about it... scratch, scratch...

*: I'm at least as excited that the WaTimes managed to find broad opposition to their strawman position that the Ten Commandments are bad.

'It brings together the three great monotheistic faiths of Christianity, Islam and Judaism'

yeah, on the battlefield

Funny how most of the Ten Commandments shrines that people are bickering about were originally installed by Hollywood to plug the latest Heston epic

To be honest, the Richmond kid wasn't suspended for eating the cookie, but rather, stealing, then eating the cookie. A bit draconian, perhaps, but still noteworty.
