Watch the World Cup
The world's most popular sporting event, soccer's World Cup, gets underway tomorrow in Germany. Unlike 2002 when matches took place in the wee hours, this year's start from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Eastern time, meaning it's a lot easier to hit a bar or two and watch a game. Some DC area bars and restaurants are opening early for the fans, including Pour House on Capitol Hill, Lucky Bar in Dupont, and Fado in Chinatown, which start serving beer at 9 AM on game days. Other bars will be showing the matches on tape delay in the evening, such as Temperance Hall in Petworth, and others will be showing weekend games, like Galaxy Hut in Clarendon.
And for those not looking to mix booze and work, try the soccer-themed 90 Min Cafe coffee shop in Adams Morgan or national establishments - the Alliance Francaise for French-speaking countires, Goethe Institut for Germany, and various African, Irish, and Latin American bars and restaurants around the metro area.
We suspect Bar Pilar will do something as well, since they already host English Premier League brunches. And there's always ESPN Zone. For a list of places to watch, check out the Post's city guide. And be ready to see coworkers take long "business" lunches on the 12th, when the USA plays the Czech Republic at noon.

Sonoma Restaurant is showing all games and rebroadcasts on their second floor lounge, smoke free, lots of couches.....

Screw long lunches, I've already announced my intent to take the entire day off.
Yay World Cup!
WORLD CUP, WORLD CUP, WORLD CUP!!!!!
~~~w00t!!!
Any word on restaurants or bars around Tysons Corner that might have the game on during the day? I suppose any old Korean restaurant will probably have the game on, but thought I'd see if there was something promoted elsewhere. Or something with large screen TVs. Nothing will beet going to an Irish pub in Chicago at 6 am for a free brunch like I did the last time around, though.
DC1974: Check the DC Boards at Big Soccer, I think someone posted something about trying to get a group at a bar in Tyson's...
Or come on down the Arlington Cinema Drafthouse, where I'll be hanging out.
Yay for the World Cup, Damn having to study for the bar during the day.
How can you miss Summer's? It was voted the best soccer bar in America last year. Sure, it requires that you go all the way across the river into Arlington, but for cryin' out loud, it's the BEST IN AMERICA. You can pull out your passports, metro to Courthouse and walk a block. They're even re-broadcasting early morning games after work is over.
From what I hear, no work gets done at the World Bank or the IMF during the World Cup.
SUMMERS in Arlington will the center of the universe for all DC soccer fans. This place has an international reputation for their ability to show any game at any time. I heard some crazy stories about this place last time the world cup came around.
From Post:
Summers was the focus of international media attention in 2002 when the owner decided to keep the restaurant open around the clock during the World Cup, broadcasting games live from Japan and Korea in the wee hours of the morning. Later Summers was voted best soccer bar in the United States in a poll run by the U.S. Soccer Federation.
With all their new Plasmas and LCDs I am sure this place will be packed! The real intense fans will be here.
Needed: Optimal viewing location near Thomas Circle for USA v. Czech Republic.
The Argonaut at 15th and Maryland NE will be showing the games.
Thanks. I am hoping for something that I can take a long lunch at. And not have to fight my way from Tysons to Arlington during the mid-day rush. So I'll check out the boards over there.
I watched the '98 Cup in the basement bar of Addis Ababa, which was fantastic...lots of Dutch fans with horns and everything. Now that they've closed their Adams Morgan location, I'm at a total loss. Maybe Awash...Ethiopian restaurants are great places to take in the footie.
MM: Well, it's a Dupont Circle location, but Lucky Bar is reasonably close and had a fantastic soccer friendly atmosphere.
