The Long Slog Home

trapped on the MetroWith horror stories of two and three-hour commutes still fresh in capital-area residents' minds, the deluge has started once again -- just in time for the trek homeward. While some enlightened souls made an early escape from work, those of us who are less fortunate are wondering what the conditions are like out there on the roads. We've checked the traffic reports and tuned our car radios to WTOP, but were hoping that those of you who have braved the slick -- and in some cases impassible -- streets and rails could post your tips, warnings, and workarounds for this afternoon's soggy commute in the comments section of this post. Safe journey, everyone.

took about 90 minutes to get from tenleytown out to nova this morning but the metro was just fine, even archives, so it only took the normal 25-30 minutes this afternoon.

Considering the DC rains have been the top story on CNN and Drudge all day long, it's surprising to me that the only mention of them on DCist was the small blurb in the Morning Roundup.

Got stuck on the Amtrak at New Carollton last night. Took a 2.5 hr Grayhound tour of the beltway, SE, and NE to get back to Union Station. Ended up doing a 3 point turn on the highway at one point!

Boy, that must have been some U-turn.

I find it funny that there is a large lack of coverage on the local sites...NBC4, WJLA, Fox5, and WUSA...the only decent coverage is from WTOP...

It looks like the rain has started falling for another night of H20. At least it waited until most of the commute finished (mine anyways).

At 6:30pm, it took me 45 minutes to drive from 17th and G to 15th and P. Now I understand why I normally ride the bus or walk.

After waiting AN HOUR for an H1 to come, I gave up and grumbled my way to Foggy Bottom. I got out at McPherson Square to get the 42, which I luckily caught right away, but we crawled in uncomfortably close quarters all the way home. Total trip time: 2 hours and 10 minutes to go 1.9 miles. Beer when I got home: extra delicious.

SCS: It's rain. Whoop-dee-freakin'-do. Creates some headaches for travelers and delays for commuters. Drudge has the tendency to, um, inflate certain stories. It's not that big of a deal, IMO.

Even though all problems with Metro were supposedly fixed by then, it took me twice as long as usual to get from Ballston to Woodley on my reverse commute last night. And don't believe WMATA's site today when it says "There are no service alerts at this time." The Orange line is still quite fucked up. Trains were delayed and therefore super packed this morning in both directions.

Man, the Orange line can suck my balls.

scs,

I was wondering too, why the DCist news team and the DCist news van was idling all day on this huge story. Come on! Dcist is cultural/lifestyle "blog", it is hardly your local news station. Most of the articles are canned the night before, while the rest of the staff heads to their paying jobs during the day. Think of Dcist as a magazine, with most of the articles focused on the past and future tense...leave WTOP to deal with the now.

RJ, true DCist is a culture blog, but in the past they have covered new stories in current time, like the "bomb" scare in Rayburn. I was thoroughly unimpressed with the complete lack of coverage. DCist, what gives?

and yes, despite WMATA saying there were no delays, my normal 45 minute commute home last night on the orange line took an hour and a half. ugh.

Drudge is an asshole. His site is a POS

I'll bet that people with basements full of water or with compromised roofs would say that it is a big deal.
