The
So TV execs in the readership, listen up! DCist has some very serious suggestions on how to bring in that 18 to 35-year-old demographic while capturing the true spirit of the District.
- Who thought the life of a federal contractor was boring? CSI meets Friends in this action-packed series about a crack team of defense contractors who go on covert missions, but return in time for beer pong and flip cup at Dr. Dremo's.
- The brightest young minds in the country all come to Washington for one thing: Jobs at influential think tanks. This fall, follow a cast of incredibly good-looking, young geniuses as they navigate the murky waters of policy analysis, grant proposals, and love. The Tank will have you on the edge of your seat.
- It’s 1980, the heyday of the D.C. art and music scene. A cast of sexy young writers for the “smart magazines” mingle with Dischord punks and color school artists in this pseudo-period drama. Laguna Beach meets James Baldwin's Another Country.
- They’re out to take over the world, but first they have to open mail. Follow the exploits of young and beautiful “Staff Asses” as they get it on with semi-important people in between aping free lunches off lobbyists and answering phones. It’s all politics, baby.
- And this one is our favorite, for obvious reasons: A group of eager bloggers come together to make a blog all about D.C. Only--get this--they never see each other in real life! You’ll love the crazy antics as they try to conceal their blogging from their oblivious bosses!
Readers, got any great pitches for the networks for a D.C.-based show that could bring in more young viewers? Drop 'em in the comments.

This is funny..great potential!
How about "The Swarm", the show about the seasonal plague of Washington interns, whose souls are slowly crushed by the relentless Capitol Hill political machine. Experience their heart-breaking realization that daddy's allowance can't pay for both a "cute 1 bedroom in Dupont Circle" *and* the latest fashions in Georgetown. Laugh at the hilarious office hijinks: collated or not? regular or decaf? cream, sugar or both? Feel pity for the poor untipped bartenders, doling out bottle after bottle of undrinkable light-beer swill. The show practically writes itself.
How about the trials and travails of a non-profit special interest group trying to get a statue erected on the national mall? Between attending budget hearings, parsing zoning laws, engaging in architectural/aesthetic brainstorming, and tirelessly blowing Senate staffers in the bathrooms of Capitol Hill bars, "The Monument" is guaranteed to prolong the drama for at least twenty to thirty years.
Unfortunately, the problem with all the tv shows that were based in DC is that their premise depends too heavily on the fact that they're in DC! Couple that with the federal/political appearance of our town for most of the world and of course the subject matter will skew old! Come up with a witty, clever show that just so happens to take place in DC and only occasionally involves those things, and then that becomes a vehicle for highlighting some of the other homegrown aspects of the District.
Doesn't Bones take place in DC? Or maybe they were just there for one episode..
X Files was based in DC, and that had a pretty young audience. Of course, they were only ever in DC like once every 7 episodes in between being attacked by swamp monsters and aliens, but ya know.
