Where in the World is Williams?
Finding D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams these days is starting to seem more and more like a game of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" Today the Post reports on Williams' two-week worldwide tour, writing:
On Friday, it was London. On Saturday, Istanbul. On Tuesday, he was in Paris. And today? If it's Thursday, it must be Johannesburg. For the moment, that's where Williams plans to stay. The South African city is the final stop on a whirlwind tour of world capitals on which Washington's peripatetic mayor embarked June 28 and from which he is scheduled to return July 11.According to their figures, Williams has spent 31 percent of his time this year out of the District, more than 2003 and 2004 but a shade less than 2005.
We can only imagine the sleuthing that goes on at the Post to track Williams down. It may go something like this:
Reporter 1: Any word on Williams' whereabouts? They'll get close to Williams when he comes back to the District, but he'll give them the slip again soon.
Reporter 2: Nothing but a clue we found at the Wilson Building. It's a note that says, "You'll find me if you go 'Strait to Bosphorus.'"
Reporter 1: Crafty bastard. Where is that?
Reporter 2: Well, the note was written on letterhead from the Hilton of Tsargrad.
Reporter 1: Tsargrad?
Reporter 2: It's one of the many names for Istanbul, Turkey.
Reporter 1: Ah. Did we nab him there?
Reporter 2: A day late, we were. But a bell-boy told us he told him that he'd be "Enjoying the scene" at his next destination.
Reporter 1: That's not terribly helpful.
Reporter 2: Think outside the box, chum. The scene? Sounds an awful lot like "Seine," doesn't it? As in Seine River!
Reporter 1: Paris!
Reporter 2: Exactly! To the Postmobile!

What's the big deal if Williams goes on foreign travel? It doesn't cost the city any money and he's not going to affect city policy with his lame-duck status. At least in his travels he can promote the city for foreign investment via business or tourism.
Your recollection of Carmen Sandiego-speak is uncanny. Bravo!
And re: GB's comment, doesn't the mayor use taxpayer money for travel?
DCIST U R RETARDED, L8ER, LOL
From TFA:
hilarious
just remember, first you have to find the loot and the warrant before you catch the crook.
i'm not saying the mayor's a crook, but that's just how you play the game.
Epic. Love me some Carmen Sandiego action!
Yes, but in comments to washingtonpost.

"because the mayor has placed good managers in place throughout the government, the city runs well even when the mayor is not sitting at his desk."
Which is, well, a suspect assertion if nothing else.
Not that I think he's lying about the taxpayer funding - but he's a shill, and he's willing to fudge facts like a shill.
go easy on the mayor!
We should dock him 31% of his salary. What the heck benefit to D.C. is there from his trip to Istanbul? He travels on boondoggles all over the world at the expense of "third parties" whose agendas are unknown and largely unknowable, all the while defending himself against accusations of neglect with the assertion that he is accessible by Blackberry the whole time in case anyone needs him.
He should really be ashamed of the Posts's picture of him inaugurating a pool opening in Paris.
