Weekly Music Agenda
The music department took a bit of a siesta to watch fireworks, eat hot dogs, and catch Panacea -- the excellent hip hop outfit that rose from the ashes of RPM. As always, if you've got any other suggestions for this week, let us know in the comments.
WEDNESDAY
>> Hardcore DIY outfits Badeatinghabits and Jinxed at Twelve infuse scremo in the former and melodic DC punk in the latter. Enjoy them both at the Warehouse Next Door. $7.
>> DC Griots host an impromptu show with hip-hop and rock fusion acts K Beta and Throwdown Syndicate. At DC9, $2.
THURSDAY
>> There may be a lot going on tonight, like Fort Reno, but the city's blog and panda-loving denizens will be at Chief Ike's for the Butterstick Bash.
>> The Millenium Stage hosts The Frank Russo Quartet - led by seasoned drummer Russo – as they perform a program of Latin jazz. Free, 6PM.
>> Unbuckled alums Olivia Mancini and the Housemates muse with spare folkish instrumentation, opened for by Bullet Parade’s upbeat, boisterous sound and Perry Farrell vocals. With The Sentiment at the Black Cat Backstage. $8, 9PM
>> Body Electric and High Speed Charger deliver loud, fun, and interesting. Plus, the singers in Body Electric sound like Black Eyes and Filter rolled into one. At the Warehouse Next Door. $9, 8:30PM.
FRIDAY
>> As part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, The McDades will be performing modern roots music mixed with bluegrass, jazz, and Celtic medleys in both English and French. At the Millennium Stage. Free, 6PM.
SATURDAY
>> We know all your calendars are already marked, but don't forget to get your dose of bluestate, DCist's favorite DJs, on the Black Cat Back Stage. Free, 9:30 p.m.
>> Middle Distance Runner is one of the hardest working bands in DC. Thankfully, they sound good too. Go see them at DC9 with The Third Programme and Triggers. $8.
>> Soul is a music form that moves in and out of fashion with popular culture in the longest cycles. Right now, it's in. Which is good news for The Brand New Heavies and Van Hunt, and good news for music lovers. We can't knock the credentials of Van Hunt, a performer the New York Times calls “the perfect soundtrack for any seduction.” If Neil Strauss didn't write that, a retraction is in order. At the 9:30 Club. $28, 7:30PM.
SUNDAY
>> Local buzz collectors Georgie James hook up with senior popsmiths, Camera Obscura for a night of head bobbing that will will leave you as sweet and light as Meg Ryan when she gets near Tom Hanks. At the Black Cat Mainstage. $12, 8:30PM.
