Weekly Music Agenda
Monday
>> Struggling through another slow week of the 9-5? Well there's a Labor Day light at the end of the tunnel and what better way to get you there than with two very loud and bold female punk songstresses who will shake you right into the weekend. Catch Full Minute of Mercury (***) and Knives in the Attic tonight at DC9. 8pm, $8.
Tuesday
>> While Shakira works out her Oral Fixation, Wyclef Jean has been busy promoting his Yele Haiti foundation, that provides humanitarian aid to his homeland and the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. We are told they will both will be at the Verizon Center tonight, that is unless her hips aren’t in fact telling the truth. 7:30pm.
>> How this Eastern European punk-folk band found their way into the New York indie rock scene is quite the mystery. Based on traditional Jewish folk music that includes accordions and violins, Golem seems to be following in the footsteps of artists like Matisyahu, who are bringing a new edge to the old world sound. See for yourself what they’re all about at The Red & The Black with Dj Anaan. $8.
Wednesday
>> Hear those crickets chirping?
Thursday
>> DC’s own Lejeune (***) has been touring the east coast, working on the follow up to 2004’s self-titled album, and turning heads in the radio airwaves with their single “Moon-shy City.” Show them some love at the Blackcat this Thursday with Andy Zipf. 9pm, $6..
>> They’ve been honored by Alternative Addiction reaching the #1 Spot on the Top Ten Unsigned Bands with their hit single “Only In Photographs”. The DC based band, Honor By August, will be at Iota this week with Seth Kallen and the Reaction, and DCist favorite Alec Gross and the Districts (***). 9pm, $10.
Friday
>> Kick off your Labor Day weekend with a triple threat of upbeat local rock, as Welbilt (***), The Speaks, and Politicks dominate the State Theatre in Falls Church. 8:30pm, $12 advance, $14 at the door.
>> Or liberate your dance at DC9, where you can soak up and request the latest indie tracks while bizarre films and music videos play on the surrounding walls. Where else can you still be guaranteed to rock out to Bloc Party’s “Banquet” by the end of the night? Cus that song really never does get old now, does it? $5.
Saturday
>> Do you like American music? We like American music, and this Saturday night you can catch your favorite 80’s indie folk rockers, The Violent Femmes at the 9:30 Club with openers Langhorne Slim. $25.
>> In case you missed them the first time around at Jammin’ Java, both The Sketches and The Upwelling put on an excellent show, with truly awe inspiring vocals. They’re back, this time at Iota with opener Zac Clark. 9:30pm, $10.
>> In the spirit of the late 1960’s San Francisco music scene, BodyRock productions brings us Summer Sessions 6, a free park party in Arlington, featuring san fran DJ Rick Preston. Locals Juan Zapata of East Coast Boogiemen and Exit Only, among others, fill out the lineup. The party goes from noon until 9pm, so dust off your dancing feet (no shoes required) and grab your Frisbee. Gateway Park, Arlington Virginia. (Contributed by DCist Elizabeth)
Sunday
>> The summer’s not over yet. Spend one more night out under the stars with John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and rising pop vocalist Mat Kearney (think Coldplay or The Fray) at the Nissan Pavilion. 6:30pm.

On Wednesday there's a great band from Chapel Hill playing at the Grog and Tankard called the Never. Their debut album is an amalgam of indie pop, folk, electronic, and classical arrangements, but it doesn't suck the way most bands who would like to describe themselves that way do. It's a concept album that comes with an illustrated storybook, but isn't weighted down with the heavy-handed pretention that usually accompanies projects like that. It's just really good. Check it out: www.myspace.com/thenever.
Or, there's always the oh-so-British reverb and delay abuse of Inlight at DC9, if you're into listening to lead guitarists ruin pop songs. The Sunday Mail is headlining the Red and Black that night as well, and while they seem to think they've transcended genre and description, anyone with a little perspective can see that they're just ripping off the Beatles. Not that that's a bad thing. So if you need to drown out the crickets, there's a few options other than wandering around the Black Cat and remarking to no one in particular how quiet it is.

Shellac and Uzeda

About the Shellac Show
due in part to some of the problems experienced during the concert series this summer, fort reno is no longer allowed to host shellac and uzeda at the big red stage in the park.
the show has been moved to the black cat at 1811 14th st. n.w. while this won't be our show any longer, shellac has been gracious enough to invite us to come and try to raise some awareness and much needed funds at the show.
as well as the volunteers of fort reno, shellac was extremely disappointed that we could longer be their official hosts. the band was very much looking forward to the opportunity to play the park.
i know that we must sometimes sound like a broken record but i hope that everyone will recognize what the members of shellac see: we are extremely lucky to have such a resource in this city as the fort reno concert series. i would like to think that for any of you reading this who didn't comply with the law of the park this year, you will read this and not just think twice about doing it again, but that you see that we weren't kidding when we said that failure to obey the rules as stated can result in us losing our permit. for those of you who just enjoyed the shows: thank you and i hope that reading this will help you to feel a little more protective over the concert series and not allow bad things to happen there.
the concerts are brought to you by a very small group of volunteers and it is funded 100% by private donations of money, services and supplies. to be sure it goes without saying but the washington, dc area is world renowned for its music of all flavors. what has set it apart in many respects is that the creators have cultivated a community that supports itself. fort reno could not continue without the generosity of the bands who play for free, the friends who give their time and the national park service whose continued belief in the validity of the concert series allowed us to celebrate our 39th summer.
we are excited about our 40th season and looking forward to sharing it with all of you, your family and friends. there are simple ways to be a part of keeping the concerts happening: sign up on our email list, donate a few bucks, keep coming out to the shows, come the shellac show and buy a t-shirt (we'll have past years) and be in our corner if we need you.
