Snakebite In Suburbia

dcistsnake.jpgIf you are not yet fatigued by the hype surrounding Snakes on a Plane, the Samuel L. Jackson action thriller where, um, snakes terrorize people on a plane, then head on up to Bethesda this weekend to Grapeseed, where Chef Jeff Heineman and friends have put together a super serpentine supper.

Snakes on a Plate, a five-course meal riffing on the aforementioned movie, is available only at the chef’s table this Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26.

The menu features bluefin sashimi with ponzu “slithering through,” grilled baby octopus with “eight snake-like tentacles,” soba noodles in eel sauce and the snake-like pasta, bucatini, in that bacon-y, buttery, cheesy, creamy white sauce known as carbonara. Each course is offered with eclectic wine pairings. Desert is churros – a deep fried Mexican doughnut that looks like the playdough version of a snake – with cinnamon ice cream.

The meal is $50 for food, plus $30 for drinks.

Grapeseed has also created a drink for the occasion, which it is calling the Venom Cocktail. It features Soju -- a Korean distilled spirit, a French electric green herbal liquor appropriately named Chartreuse, and fresh lime juice, served straight up in a martini glass.

The response to the offering from the low-key and well-heeled Bethesda crowd has been as expected.

“Most of our customers are a little weirded-out by it so far, but our tables are filling up fast,” said Jason Koitz, general manager, who recently arrived at Grapeseed via the empire behind Ten Penh, DC Coast and Acadiana.

More blockbuster movies will be released before the end of the summer, notes Koitz, so Grapeseed will have plenty of inspiration for its next special menu.

Yes, but DCist wants to know, will the other movies besides SoaP have the kind of fanbase that generates entire blogs or a link allowing you to prank your friends with a free, personalized phone call from Mr. Jackson?
