WaPo Food Gets BoGlo Editor
With all the turmoil and upheaval at the Post's food section over the past couple of years, we were waiting for news that Tom Sietsema and Walter Nicholls would just take the thing over and rule it a la Tenacious D's two kings in City Hall. This is not the case, though. WaPo announced (good get, fishbowl!) that Boston Globe food writer Joe Yonan will be the new editor for the food section. We here at DCist are doing the new editor dance.
Before writing for the Globe food section, Mr. Yonan attended the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts, and was an editor for the Globe's news and travel sections. He's written some pretty good stuff, including this piece on cupcakes, a long column on umami, and a recent column on Boston's food carts. I can't find a picture of Mr. Yonan floating around anywhere, but he does have a soothing voice. He was born in Albany (pronounced all-BIN-e, for you Yankees), Georgia and raised in San Angelo, Texas. He kept it weird at the University of Texas at Austin until his graduation in 1989. Joe will start shaping the Post food section on October 1, and we can hardly wait. Welcome to Washington!
Eamonn's is Open
For all of you waiting for your fix of things fried, you can stop. Eamonn's Dublin Chipper from the good folks at Restaurant Eve is finally open! DCist stopped by Wednesday for a lunch review, but you'll have to wait until next week for our first look at the place. In any event, Eamonn's is bustling for both lunch and dinner, and the upstairs bar, PX, will be open on September 7. Bar Chemist Todd Thrasher says he has fourteen new mixed drinks ready to go, so be sure to have something to eat before trying one of each.
ps7 to Open This Month
Peter Smith, formerly of Occidental and Vidalia, plans to open his own restaurant, ps7 sometime later this month. Thanks to a link from new ps7 General Manager Danny Boylen (2006 RAMMY winner for best G.M., formerly of Notti Bianche), I realize now that people are talking about a new restaurant and not the latest version of Photoshop. The menu gives us a good dose of Continental cooking with Asian influences, but thankfully doesn't go all IndeBleu on us.

The Funniest Thing You'll Read All Week
Local blogger Jordan Baker busts out the funny juice and drenches us with it. Witness the Food Network set to "We Didn't Start the Fire," and laugh your ass off. Money line: "Oil once around the pan, Sandra Lee was once a man." Go now.
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
Trader Joe's West End is open. Go get drunk on three dollar wine and organic milk.
Don Rockwell Closes "Ray's the Classics" Thread
As of 12:13 today, Don Rockwell closed the Ray's the Classics thread on his site after a rather cryptic reference to Soviet type rules? It also appears some posts are missing. Is there anyone out there up on what happened? Was there libel? Was Al Qaeda posting there? Or, is it just one the increasingly frequent instances of heavy-handed moderation on the local gastronaut landing pad?

D.C. Unemployment Rate Reaches 11.9 Percent

Glad you pointed out Jordan Baker's brilliant song - I meant to link to it but what can I say ... I forgot. And I love that she pulled up RayRay's FHM photo.
donrockwell.com threads sometimes get locked a little while when they veered way off topic or flame up and things need to chill.
Did you have to feature Dunkin Donuts as your photo? One just opened- it's only the latest nail in the coffin of local business in Dupont.
Boycott chainstores. Or get the (more) homogenous, corporate-owned, aesthetically and socially heinous town you deserve.
"the latest nail in the coffin of local business in Dupont."
Sorry to report but the coffin sealed and being lowered 6ft.
Um, how did a fucking food comment thread get taken over by Rees blithering? Has anybody been to the new TJs?
Anyone notice that the new Trader Joe's has "Trader Joe's Foggy Bottom" written in large letters in the entrance? Since when has that area been Foggy Bottom?
Local Retail's not yet buried in Dupont- We've got more of it than most neighborhoods in DC- but it is drib-drabbing away in a very public way.
[ignoring all the nonsense above]
Eamonn's was delicious. I want it to be a bit cheaper and they need more seating, but otherwise a superb experience. They are still figuring it out ... let's give them time.
Eamonn's. Delicious. (Also ignoring the Ward 3 troll.)
That "We Didn't Start The Fire" parody is great. Thanks for the linkage!
[ignoring all the nonsense above]
I hit the Chipper with the family on Friday for dinner, it was our second trip in as many weeks; delicious again! Unfortunately there was no FOD, but the cod is so good that I didn't really care.
I agree that it is a bit spendy but IMHO the premium you pay is for the quality of the ingredients.

I hate the chains too, but rather than trolling/flaming/ranting like a loon, I prefer to just point people in the right direction.
What? No more bitter old Sietsema? What a shame that would be. Couldn't think of a better person to be passed over the BOQ.
I'll take Dunkin' Donuts over Starbucks any day. If we're going to have chains, might as well have them with cheaper, better tasting coffee.

Heck yeah man! One just opened on 8th St in SE too! Vanilla coffee yummmmm...just hope they're use filtered water not tap.
Thanks too for the info on Eammons, I'm heading there this week.
Get over it people nothing is authentic in DC.
... especially the "more jaded and cynical than thou" attitudes.
