Arts Agenda: The New, The Temporary, and The Freaky

Lori Esposito>>H Street is already doing well as our new go-to for beer and good music; now they're adding some art to the neighborhood. Dissident Gallery officially opens its doors this weekend with a reception tonight at 7 p.m. Check out Kid Flash's textile and paint explorations of gender and class, Valentina Loi's photo transfers that use childhood games as metaphors for relationships, and works by Piero Passacantando.

>>Irvine Contemporary opens a group exhibit that shows off many of the fine artists they've worked with since moving to 14th Street. Over Under Sideways Down, Backwards Forwards Square and Round includes Ju-Yeon Kim, who's work we loved last May, Randy Toy, a recent art grad we covered in this summer's student show, and list of others such as Susan Jamison, Julie Evans and Chuck Close. Don't miss Lori Esposito's solo show of new paintings (pictured) in the back room. The opening reception is Saturday 6 to 8 p.m.

>>The second project for Street Scenes is underway with installations going up around the city, continuing their mission to bring art to the public. (We told you about their first one here.) Cal Lane and Linn Meyers are creating temporary works with sand and dirt at different places and times until Sunday. Take off work early and stop by the park on Euclid Street in Adams Morgan, where the artists have been working since noon. Tomorrow you can find them up Connecticut Avenue near Politics and Prose, while Sunday they hit up Chinatown near the Goethe-Institut. Check out the web site for more information.

>>This weekend head up to Maryland for the Bethesda Row Art Festival. Held Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival stretches four blocks filled with 180 artists displaying works in nearly every kind of media. Although their web site makes Bethesda sound a little more dreamy than most of us are willing to believe ("Low-rise retail and office buildings create a very pleasing, human-scale, town-center feel"?), you can't beat a day out in the sun (we suggest Saturday) enjoying free music and street performers, hands-on activities, and, of course, meat-on-a-stick aplenty.

>>Prepare for Halloween with some Freaky Art at Warehouse. We mentioned it in last weeks agenda, but tonight you can attend the reception from 6 to 8 p.m. If you get inspired, offer up your work for their upcoming Peace Show, which is still accepting artist submissions. Contact molly [at] warehousetheater [dot] com for more information on submissions or volunteering.

>>We highlighted the opening of Robin Rose's show, Likeness, at Hemphill Fine Arts in Semptember. If you haven't stopped by to see why the gallery chose works by this well-known local painter to open their new season, this Saturday is a good time to do it, because he'll be giving an artist talk from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Call 202-234-5601 for reservations.

Any place called the Dissident Gallery sounds like a place that will warm my heart.
