It's cold out there, eh Washington? But apparently not cold enough to stop the notorious Vienna Pants Grabber, who NBC4 is reporting may be branching out from his favorite Metro stop to area apartment complexes. Freaky. Can everyone take good look at those two composite sketches so we can get this jackass off the streets? Thank you.
WMATA Jealous of DCist: Clearly recognizing the sheer genius of our very own Last Call SMS Feature, which gives you metro arrival times, plus movie, restaurant and concert information via text message right to your phone, WMATA has announced its own version of wireless access to its bus and train arrival information. And yeah, in some ways WMATA's new system is better than ours. To start with, the new information available on their web site is real time, as opposed to Last Call which is only able to access their published train schedule — but just as soon at Metro makes the real time data feed available to the public, we should be able to have that for you too! Then again, WMATA's also got bus information in their service, which is frankly awesome and potentially beyond our capabilities. BUT! You have to have one of those fancy Blackberries or Sidekicks or other mobile devices that can access the Internet to use it when you're out. We still like our SMS version a lot better, if only because nearly anyone can access it at any time. We're keeping it real, yo. All of this said, please do try out WMATA's new mobile feature and let us know what you think.
Heating Oil from Chavez Headed to D.C.: Thousands of low-income families in D.C., Maryland and Virginia will have help from heating their homes this winter from, of all places, Venezuela. Last year notorious Bush-basher Hugo Chavez, who recently called the President "the devil", started selling heating oil at reduced prices in some areas of the country. This year District residents will benefit as well, if they choose to accept hand-outs from the anti-U.S. dictatorship. Look at it this way, at least it will be warm in "the devil('s)" domain.

I'm jealous of DCist, too! If the District only got one tenth of your traffic. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Hey, this guy in Vienna needs to be arrested. Obviously, a very sick individual that needs to be put behind bars.
I just want to take a moment to say thanks to y'all for Last Call! I use it all the time and love it! I've been spreading the word about it and now several of my friends use it as well. Just the other day I was wondering if you were going to make it work for bus schedules too. I'll try WMATA's new service to check it out, but Last Call is my first true love!
i tried to used last call a week ago for the metro but i didn't get a txt message back until about 1 hour or so later, after i had already gotten home from the bar. :(
For the buses, at the routes that it currently works on there is a sign at each bus stop with a phone number to call and a bus stop number. If you call and input the bus stop number it'll tell you when the next buses are coming. Also, you can text a message to an email address with the bus stop number and it'll send a message back with the next times. It's all explained on the WMATA NextBus website.
You mean Lakeforest Mall, not Landover Mall.
The stabber proceeded to flee across "Lost Knife Road".
Amazing. The new "next train" information, that is. You get essentially exactly what's on the screens down on the platform, but without having to go down there. Helps in planning. And it automatically updates about every minute. Can't WAIT till they do this for the bus too! That would be life-changing.
SE public housing complex tries to pick up the pieces after so many murders...
Step 1: Demolish housing complex
Step 2: Pick up pieces
can i say kayne west is a jackass?
I'm not exactly a fan of Chavez, but calling Venezuela "an anti-US dictatorship" is pretty extreme. I guess Martin doesn't have as much lingering influence around here as I thought . . .
They gave your Last Call feature a shoutout on channel 9 this morning. It was some kind of internet segment talking about Metro's new deal and compared it to yours, saying it's better. I checked and there's a link to your site from their site. Pretty cool the mainstream media is giving you some love!
Venezuela *is* an anti-US dictatorship. Just read and listen to what Hugo says. Plus, this whole 'oil for US' program is pure propaganda. He needs to put the needs of the poor in Venezuelans first and provide them with much needed oil (becuase he is not).
WMATA's service is awesome! Many people have web-enabled phones so this is going to be a widely used service. Published schedules for rail are pretty much useless on the weekends since they are continually under construction. It's also cute that on the web version they display the info as a graphic that looks just like the ones on the platform.
The NextBus service is awesome too since the schedules published for buses are a joke. I'd rather know where the bus *really* is and schedule myself accordingly.
I would hope that the NEXTBus technology would also help them root out the bunching problem with buses. They'll finally be able to show what is causing it, whether it's traffic, as they claim, or rather social bus drivers that hang out at their stations and then leave together at the same time.
Maybe they should explore having a bus "go express" when bunching occurs. Therefore if two buses are riding each other's fender, the front one announces that it's going to skip the next X stops, and allow anyone who needs to get off at those stops switch to the other bus. The B line T in Boston does that.
Ride that train to Allston, gotta get the hell outta Boston...
