The Weekly Feed: Free 'Nuts Edition

fractured prune doughnutsFree Doughnuts All Around
As you may have read elsewhere, today is the day for free doughnuts at the new P Street NW location of regional doughnut chain, The Fractured Prune. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today (Friday, December 1), stop by 2153 P Street NW for a free doughnut and coffee.

Despite my love for all things fried, I can't really get behind a doughnut. I like fry bread, fried pies, and fried dough, but a doughnut is way too cloying and heavy for me. However, given the choice of glazes like mocha, mint, mixed berry, orange, and caramel and toppings like mini chocolate chips and Oreo cookies, I could be persuaded to change my mind. If not, that means more for you, right?

The spot opens officially tomorrow, but it will be handing out test 'nuts this afternoon. Regular price doughnuts cost 95 cents each, and $8.95 a dozen, so if you can't make it out tonight you'll probably be able to manage a taste anyway.

Rising Star Chefs To Cook Up Supernova of Samples
StarChefs.com—the web home of all us food world lampreys looking for whatever the hottest chefs are releasing through their publicists—is stepping off the web and into meatspace for one night and one night only to throw a food-laden shindig honoring the "up and comers" of D.C.'s food scene.

On Wednesday, December 13, the StarChefs Rising Star Revue will offer up a taste of what D.C.'s young and hot chefs are slinging out of their kitchens. The likes of Eve's Cathal Armstrong, Vidalia's RJ Cooper, Bart Vandaele of Belga Café, PX's mixologist Todd Thrasher, and pinball pastry chef Heather Chittum (Dish, then Citronelle, now Dish again) will serve some of their signature creations while reaping the love of their adoring fans.

The chefs and sommeliers were selected by the StarChef advisory board, which is comprised of top-tier chefs like Olives' Todd English, Equinox' Todd Gray, Bobby Flay, Daniel Boulud, and previously fawned over Ken Oringer, so you can rest assured that the chefs are really awesome and/or really good friends with the board members. Either way, you'll surely enjoy whatever they choose to prepare.

It's $95 a person for the event, which will take place at the National Association of Home Builders on 15th and Massachusetts Ave., NW. Tickets are available now; act fast before the legion of Barton Seaver lovers snatch them up.

Small Bites
Hot Chocolate Therapy
Are you having a bad day? Are you stressed out? Did you break your T.V. with the Nintendo Wii remote? If so, head to Murky Coffee at Eastern Market for the best damn cup of hot chocolate you've ever had. Their "$5 Hot Chocolate" is like drinking a velvet cloud of chocolaty nirvana. If you've ever had the conversation with your friends about which food you'd most like to sleep in (and who hasn't?), this will definitely take the top spot. Seriously, it knocked nacho cheese and freshly baked bread completely out of the running. "$5 is a lot," you say? It's a deal at twice the price.

Fjord the River to Icelandic Festival
The Washington Icelandic Association will hold their annual Holiday Bazaar at the Women's Club in Arlington on Sunday, December 3, from 2 to 5 p.m. You'll be able to find all your favorite Icelandic goodies like candy and snyttur! When was the last time you had snyttur?! Does anyone know what snyttur is? The Women's Club is at 700 South Buchanan Street in Arlington. Snyttur!

Sushi Deal at UNI
UNI, the Sushi restaurant at 2122 P. St. NW, is having a week-long sushi bonanza from December 4 to December 10. They're offering six courses of sushi with five different sakes for only $45.
