Nostalgic Comedy Show, Rejuvenated

2007_01_11_The_Reef.jpgBack in October, we reported on a weekly comedy showcase at the 18th Street hangout Bossa that went homeless after some beef between the venue's managers and the show's emcees. It was a sad day for many budding Washington comics, since the Thursday nights at Bossa had a Dead Poets Society-meets-Cheers camaraderie. It felt like home for the comics and Bossa regulars. At DCist, we crossed our fingers that the word would spread, and another venue's management would adopt the show.

Mission Accomplished! Whether or not we’re really the rainmakers, the Bossa alums were recently adopted by The Reef restaurant and bar in Adams Morgan. The kick-off show is tonight at 9 p.m., and will run every Thursday, per usual. Former emcee Seaton Smith is still a key figure, but a new line-up of producers and hosts will take over, including Andy Hayes, Kojo Mante, Jay Hastings and Rory Scovel. Every week this emcee backbone will welcome five rotating comics, including local familiar faces like John McBride, Diana Saez and Larry Poon.

Hayes has a few re-formatting ideas for the Thursday Showcase, aiming to make comedy a progressive, barrier-pushing art form in Washington. Starting tonight, the show will toy with new ideas, including one called “Same Set High! (Or Drunk, After 3 Red Bulls, Etc.),” where a comic will perform the show twice - sober and otherwise. Another one is "The Joke Down" where a few comics will out-joke each other on a given topic, and rival for the weekly Joke Down Crown.

The Thursday Showcase is free, and will take place in The Reef's basement space called "Lush." It should be a balance of nostalgic Bossa-ness and the novelty of new-age performance formats. Since Adams Morgan can be incestual—the same coffee drinkers go to Tryst, eat at the Diner and hang at the Reef—hopefully, this in-crowd will hear the show downstairs and add Thursday Showcase to the list of 18th Street fixtures.

these guys are fucking horrendous

We had great turnout last night and a fun time breaking in the room. Hopefully we'll get people coming back next week, when we'll have a whole new lineup of comics and a special Joke Down between comics.
