New, Free City and Bicycle Trail Maps

dcmap.JPGLike free maps? Or for that matter, like to have a city, taxi-zone, or bicycle trail map of the District that's accurate and up to date? Well wish no more, the D.C. government is here to meet your every cartographical desire. Via WTOP:

The city is offering free, new maps that are easier to read. To get one call 202-727-1000.

"It's very friendly on the eyes," Erik Linden, spokesman for the D.C. Department of Transportation, says of the city street map. "It includes a map of taxi zones, includes a Metrorail map, snow and emergency evacuation routes."

The city also has a new map of bicycle trails.

"The District now has 25 miles of bicycle lanes, compared to 1999 when the District had three miles of bicycle lanes," Linden says.

As you'll recall, the new taxi zone maps included in this announcement were part of Mayor Adrian Fenty's 200 initiatives in 100 days announcement last month -- so after you call and order your free maps, make sure to keep an eye out for the new zone maps when they start popping up in taxis.

UPDATE: Indeed, as pointed out in comments, when we called just now to order our maps, we were directed to call (202) 673-6813. So bypass the mayor's call center line and call this number directly for your free maps.

Make everyone call a number instead of posting the files to the internet...what an efficient use of resources.

After calling the number listed in your story, they direct you to call: 202.673.6813.

So I guess this makes the zone map we stole out of the back of a taxi cab onsolete... damn.

I got laid just because I had one of these maps!

about time us cartographers got our respect! damn, we're sexy

can someone just scan these and post them online?

all your DC map needs can be found at dc.gov's GIS webpage.

There's actually lots of maps on the DC Gov site here. Happy mappin'! I didn't see a bike map though.

According to the press release on the DDOT site, they are online -- and they look new to me (taxi- zones map oriented north and all). Ironically, though, the city street map is now oriented at roughly the same angle that the old taxi zones one was.

I'm not typekeyed, so someone else will have to post the URL.

update: Just found them on ddot.dc.gov's main page, they can be downloaded there.

The new transit map doesn't have the yellow line extension.

I don't see the fancy new zone map. Can someone link to it?

It's on the street map in the bottom left corner next to the key... and still pretty small and pointless

How hard is it for this city to print maps where north faces up and south down? That was one of the (many) problems with the taxi zone map. Now their tiny zone map is oriented nicely, but the street map makes me lose balance from tilting my head too much.
