The District's Idol Lives To Sing Another Day

picture of american idol contest antonella barbaGood news, Washington: our vicarious American Idol dreams live on! Despite a performance of "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" that prompted criticism even from Paula Abdul, D.C. resident Antonella Barba has made it through the show's first round of voting.

Nice as this is to hear, it's not unexpected. DialIdol.com, a site that provides autodialing software and analyzes the incidence of busy signals to gauge voting volume, predicted that Barba would finish safely in the top 3.

What accounts for Antonella's success? She's certainly an attractive woman, but there's reason to think that's not all that's at work: Vote For The Worst, a self-explanatory site that's been gleefully attempting to short-circuit American Idol for the past few years, selected Antonella as their pick for this week.

But there may be more to it than that. On the basis of some comments floating around the D.C. blogosphere, we thought that our local girl might be the contestant that America loves to hate. But, based upon DCist's cutting edge American Idol Misogynometer technology (which consists of searching technorati for contestants' names plus the word "bitch"), it appears that she's just in the middle of the pack:

chart of the various female american idol contestants hits on technorati for their name plus the word bitch

And of course, there is one more thing: the pictures. Alas, the Internet is a cruel place, and MySpace users propelled to fame often reap a bitter harvest. The pics should probably be considered NSFW, although they are SF-Network-TV. There's no point in trying to hide something on the Internet, so we may as well invite those of you who can't resist the electronic voyeurism impulse to click here.

Will this endanger Antonella's chances? So far she seems okay — most of the pictures floating around merely depict her as a woman who likes to party. It seems safe to say that the show's producers are aware of the pics, but it seems unlikely that they're enough to justify canning a popular contestant.

But we're still not sure that even a combination of spoilerism, civic pride and prurient interest will be able to push her all the way through to the finals. Here's hoping!

I voted for her on Wednesday. (Gotta give some love my NE DC peeps.) But, to be fair, her performance on Wednesday was horrible. And while she's hot; she's not THAT hot. So unless she drastically improves next week, I bet she's gone.

I think we need to develop an American Idol Lycanthropemeter. America needs to know if they are voting for were-people.

She's soon to be finished. Take a look at what leaked onto the web.

I voted for her like 20 times!!! She is hot and she can sing. Her performance was not all that wednesday but I at least took into consideration that she was nervous and it was there first live performance. She is gonna rock it!

I really don't care about the pictures, but for the sake of consistency, AI needs to dump Antonella Barba. After all, the actually talented Frenchie Davis (who went on to wow Broadway in Rent) was kicked off for having topless photos on the Internet. We know Idol is superficial, but might it be racist too? Would the show want to take the risk of being seen as racist and unjust?

antonella barba is so pretty and has a great voice she just needs to sing a song that fits with her...i really hope she wins shes a great american idol..i know shes had a bad rep with those pics but i think she has changed.

She's smoking hot, so I want to see her stay. Her singing is not god at all, so I'm just going to sit back and 1) see how far she gets on her newfound Internet noteriety, and 2)wait for her to appeart in Playboy.

The girl is hot! I think she needs to pick a song that fits her! In the auditions in jersey..she was great..if she sings some type of song like that..she's going to go far! Antonella has my vote every week! ;)

I don't care what anybody says, everyone of those Judges are being paid to sway the public votes to vote for whomever they like. The show is not based on the person who has the best voice anymore. And that STUPID comment that Randy made about Jordin's performance being the best ever was a crock! Grant it, Jordin is good for "17" (as he continues to say), but she is definitely NOT Americans Next Idol! The only reason that Randy wants her to win is because he has bi-racial children like her. C'mon America and vote for the real American Idol!
