Bye, George
Tonight, George Michael, by far Washington's best known and most dynamic sports reporter, leaves his post at Channel 4. The move, announced in November, comes amid a swath of cutbacks at NBC which claimed fellow sportscaster Wally Bruckner along with Susan Kidd, Arch Campbell, I.J. Hudson and Clay Anderson. While Michael was offered a generous deal to stay, it would have come at the cost of cutting half his staff.
After 27 years at Channel 4, the bombastic broadcaster became not only a Washington fixture, but also a national one, securing his spot as the second most famous man of the same name. His syndicated "Sports Machine" was a precursor to "SportsCenter" and aired throughout the country. Two relative newcomers will take over sports anchoring at the station, but it's clear that no one working in D.C. today has the same popularity with area fans.
Last night the Wizards featured a video tribute to Michael during halftime, including footage from his reports through the decades and even his appearance on "The Tonight Show." He was given his own Wizards jersey and watched the game from Abe Polin's suite. Cal Ripken, Wes Unseld and even Joe Gibbs were on hand to honor the retiring hero.
Catch George Michael's last broadcast at 11 p.m. tonight on Channel 4. The last "Sports Machine" will air on March 25, while Michael will continue to host both "Redskins Report" and "Full Court Press." He'll also air regular Monday chats with Coach Gibbs.

I don't know, George Michael Bluth is pretty famous also...
Wasn't Cameron Diaz's character a Sports Machine junkie in There's Something About Mary? I hate sports, but I used to love it when George would broadcast from on top of his horse when it was snowing. The dude is some serious local DC (metro area) flavor. He's the half-smoke of sports broadcasting.
big GM is dc sports. love him or hate him, he's been a part of dc my entire life. who else would tell me about all the happenings in funny car racing and professional racing? and rodeo...big george had it on lockdown.
i'm looking forward to tonight when i expect vancie and michael to finally embrace and lock lips.
it's on!
Glenn Brenner > George Michael.
This guy is completely overrated. Thank God this loudmouthed, denture-wearing leatherface is gone. Whenever I see him and Sonny Jurgenson on tv together, it reminds me of those two old men in the balcony on "The Muppets."
I have lived in DC for ver 35 years and love Doreen, George and Vance. Been through it all. I cant beleive George is retiring, but just like Vance - he"ll be back. I am rider and if George has a jumper(3'9) or better I'm there. Thanks for for the laughes and I'm glad cancer did not get you. I actually am stalled at your old barn on comus road.
Best wishes and God Bless

Very glad to see George finally go. "Bombastic" is the wrong description - try "loud" and "annoying." Why did he have to be so noisy all the time? Every time he popped up on Channel 4, I'd yell "PUT A MUZZLE ON THAT GUY!"
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
first warner wolf. now george. oh the humanity!
