Morning Roundup: Snow Justice

We gotta say, Mother Nature is a moody lady. She gives us Saturday's near-perfect conditions to watch the Idiotarod in all it's idiotic glory, then follows up with Sunday's frigid bluster. This week, she's gonna drop the winter hammer again, with highs in the thirties and – dare I say – the possibility of snow. Stay tuned to DCist to see if the forecast warrants scaring up the ol' Snowpacalypse Warning System.

Alleged Cocaine Dealers Get Off: In 2005, after FBI and D.C. police investigators busted a Ft. Washington house that contained more than $1 million and 100 kilos of cocaine, they thought they'd shut down one of the biggest drug rings in the city. But 17 months later, a U.S. District Court jury handed down not guilty verdicts on most charges facing alleged kingpin Antoine Jones and his co-defendents. Jurors commented afterword that the prosecution lacked convincing evidence tying the defendents to the drugs or to any larger conspiracy.

Firm Spending Millions to Revamp Laurel Mall; Others Wonder, Why Bother?: Today's Post details the efforts of Somera Capital Management to revitalize Laurel Mall, which has fallen on tough times in the twilight of the era of enclosed Shopping Malls, with many wondering if further investment is throwing good money after bad. In a world of cut-throat competition where a significant facelift is required every seven years, shopping centers can quickly go from bustling to vacant. If they'd only listen to us, they'd know there's a better way to organize retail for the health of the city.

Briefly Noted: Region's office space vacancy rates edge up for fourth straight quarter... Brazen early evening shooting at Union Station on Saturday... WTOP reports that some Cleveland Park residents are up in arms about the impact two new restaurants will have on parking.

This Day in DCist: Last year, we said goodbye to the MCI Center and watched GW win a big one. In 2005, we were shocked that a developer would intentionally misname their building to capitalize on neighborhood caché. Good thing no one's tried that again.

If the Cleveland Park NIMBYs were intellectually honest about their love for the apparently long-ignored limitations on the number of restaurants in the neighborhood, they should settle on what the allowable number of restaurants is, and then pick which restaurants should close so that the magic number is reached. Boycotts and picket lines should be launched against the unnecessary restaurants.

After all, according to the Cleveland Park NIMBY logic, it's better to have empty storefronts than it is to have restaurants. Because, you see, restaurants attracy people with cars. Who have to park their cars on the streets. And that means local residents have to search around for a parking spot. Which is something that is totally rare and unheard of in an urban environment.

Truly some of the people of Ward 3 lead a charmed life when the thing that irks them the most is the fact that they live in an urban area with a very bustling social scene.

Only in DC would someone run the idotarod in khakis and with a blackberry on their hip...

The Cleveland Park NIMBYs should be reminded that they are part of a rapidly growing city and not a quaint, suburban neighborhood. These people need to move out to McLean and step aside for progress.

Idiotarod? I thought these were Trader Joe's employees.

Y'know, I hate on malls all the time, but people's livelihoods are at stake in Laurel. Can you blame them for not wanting to go the way of Landover Mall? And I hardly think the "More Shopping, Less Center" thread makes a convincing case in a suburban context where there's virtually no public transit access. But don't let that get in the way of a nice, smug, juicy rationalization.
