Weekly Music Agenda

Clinic
MONDAY >> Love him or hate him, Connor Oberst's and his Saddle Creek Records have a whole lot to do with indie kids adding some alt to their country. And, there are a lot of people in this town who fall into the "love him" category. That's probably why Bright Eyes sold out the 9:30 Club.

>> If you were planning on taking in The Young Knives and Foreign Islands tonight at the Black Cat, you'll have to make other plans, as the show has been cancelled.

TUESDAY
>> Did you watch About A Boy and think, "gee, I sure am enjoying the music, as well as Hugh Grant's foppish charm"? If so, you're in luck, because the man behind that soundtrack and a lot of other grade-A shoegaze, Badly Drawn Boy, is coming to the 9:30. $25.

>> If you're into music that's infectious and slightly unsettling, with a dose of psychadelia on the side, then look no further than Clinic, who are at the Black Cat with Holy Fuck. Clinic hasn't graced the District with their surgical-mask-clad presence since 2004, so it's not to be missed. $13, 8 p.m.

WEDNESDAY
>> Whether isicathamiya is your wheelhouse or you just really dug those lifesavers commercials growing up, head to GW's Lisner Auditorium and catch Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Tickets range from $35 to $55, but if you're a GW student you'll snag a discount. Hey, we hear you guys could stand to save a few bucks anyway. 7:30 p.m.

THURSDAY
>> What's there to say about The Who? They're the freaking Who! Because of that, tickets to see them with Rosehill Drive at the Verizon Center will set you back a pretty penny -- they're ranging from $55 to $205. Probably worth it though. 7:30 p.m.

>> District ex-pat Carol Bui and Miguel of Stamen and Pistils, Person, and Metropolitan are joining forces to bring an all-ages concert series to Arlington's Murky Coffee called "Murky Upstairs." Bui, Stamen and Pistils and Panda and Angel will play the inaugural event this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. $5.

>> Wolftrap's second stage, the Barns of Wolftrap, is doing something pretty awesome. For four general admission dance shows, they're removing all 382 floor seats to make room for dancing! This week's show comes courtesy of Room Full of Blues. 8 p.m., $22.

FRIDAY
>> Two of DCist's very favorite bands headline the Black Cat this Friday. After you've soaked in the dazzling photography at DCist Exposed, round out your evening with the haunting sounds of Nethers and the alt country stylings of These United States, fresh off of blowing our minds at Unbuckled.

>> If your mood's more intellectual hip hop than crooners and pedal steels, head to DAR Constitution Hall for an evening with The Roots, Lupe Fiasco and special guest, our very own Chuck Brown. $45 to $50, 8 p.m.

SATURDAY
>> The annual Shamrockfest has always been a way to bring the Irish and the college student out in all of us. It's moved from being a block party in Ballston to a bonafide festival at RFK. Flogging Molly and a host of other bands -- of varrying degrees of Irish -- will provide the soundtrack. Wear green and don't forget your sunscreen.

>> Lexington, KY's The Scourge of the Sea is coming back to D.C. this week to the Velvet Lounge. The band's album, Make Me Armored, has been getting buzzier and buzzier since it released last summer. Come see what they've got in store.

SUNDAY
>> The first of the Callum Roberts fundraiser shows to lather up the D.C. concertariat is upon us, as the beloved Thievery Corporation take the stage at the Black Cat. It sold out in a very DPlan fashion, so unless you already have tickets, you're probably not getting any.

not technically DC, I suppose, but it's not like you guys not to plug the Hold Steady concert in Baltimore on Tuesday . . . I'm going, Wednesday morning be damned.

I'd like to add Peter Mulvey at Jammin Java tomorrow night (3/6). $10 gets you an evening that includes a voice that will haunt you (in a good way), vivid, colorful lyrics and a terrific storyteller all-in-one.

Stinking Lizaveta @ Velvet Lounge Tuesday March 6

Humbug..

Clinic: Lose the masks
Badly Drawn Boy: Saw him in fall of 02 @ 930 Club, BOORRRING
Bright Eyes: Sophomoric rubbish.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Who needs Paul Simon

No way seeing the Who is worth $55. After all, two of the original members are dead.

Maybe if the tickets were only $27.50, it'd be worth it.

The Who ceased to be The Who the day Keith Moon died. Entwhistle's death was just another nail in an already mouldy coffin.

If you doubt that Moon was the true spirit of that band (or at least the balls), watch their performance of "A Quick One" from The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus. It wouldn't have been a fraction of the incredible performance it was without him.

Of Montreal, State Theater, Tuesday.

ISIS w/ Jesu (hopefuly) and motherfucking TORCHE at the 9:30 on Sunday evening.

Wear earplugs.

Aww, no mention of Matt and Kim at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Saturday? Very cheap ($8) and sure to be very fun.

Or what about Man in Gray and Mancino coming down from new york city to play a public house party on Saturday night? You guys usually plug them.

I think if Badly Drawn Boy had just stopped with "About A Boy" he'd actually still be worth seeing live. I saw him at TLA in Philly right before "Have You Fed The Fish" broke and the crowd was deservedly cool to the new material. For what it's worth, advertisers seem to agree, as a couple of songs from "About A Boy" are currently gracing the airwaves (in a Target commercial, I think, and maybe a car commercial as well?), and a few from "Hour Of Bewilderbeast" got some play in years past, but nothing after that has had that same kind of traction.

CLINIC is amazing. See this band. They will steal your soul.

Shortstack! Black Cat Backstage! Thursday!!

That's Conor Oberst, and man did they rock the house last night.
