We're Marching for Voting Rights

vrmlogotext.JPG

After months and months of writing about District voting rights, we finally get a chance to do something about it. Today thousands of District residents and their supporters are gathering to demand their rights, wind and weather be damned. We'll be joining them. We hope to see you there.

Because Voting Rights is technically plural and implies that there is more than one vote being bestowed upon D.C. residents, which the current bill does not provide, there will be a feeder march titled "Marching to Statehood" coming from Franklin Square. Folks are meeting there at 1pm. If you are not standing in line with the 1/3 representation Kool-Aid drinkers, consider coming to this first to show your support for full representation.

Today is the day we remember the emancipation of slaves in Washington, DC. Ironic that slaves were once considered 3/5's of human in regards to representation. Today many will be marching for 1/3 representation, others, like myself, will be marching for equality- that being 3/3.

Never forget that democracy only works in whole numbers.

Or, if you can't leave work that early, you can still proclaim your statehood stance with the 2pm crowd so lovingly described above.

Never forget that democracy works better when we drop the vitriol against those who could be our allies.

For those of you interested only in the Kool-Aid itself, we will be meeting at aisle 3 of the Dupont Safeway at 1:30.

sorry for the double posting - it didn't show up for an hour, so i figured it was gone....

Why the hell did they schedule this on a workday? Now I can see why some people in this country don't want us to have a vote, because the people we elect to lead us are idiots.

Karl - I had always assumed that government workers must be able to get out of work for any reason during the week ... because the rest us sure can't! Every important Council meeting or vote is also held during the day so the most any of us "workers" can do is send letters/emails and hope for the best.

Far and away the biggest and best DC Voting Rights march/event I've been to. A big thanks to everyone involved in setting it up.

I remember 6 years ago there was a rally at the Capitol and about 50-100 people showed up. The momentum is really building...

I showed up at the rally at the scheduled starting time--4:00. They were taking down the stage and I was informed that the rally had started and ended early. Many of my friends (and I don't know how many dozens or hundreds of others) had the same frusturating experience.

The same thing happened to Joe Lieberman. He spoke at the reception. He was on his way outside to speak at the rally, but was told it wasn't going on anymore. Glad to see someone's comment that it was the biggest/best ever. But myself and others I know left work early and traveled to participate, only to waste our time.

I wonder if they will report on hwo poor of an event this was?
