DC Voting Rights Act Returns to House Floor Tomorrow

2007_0418_votingrights.jpg

Breaking just now: The DC Voting Rights Act (now H.R. 1905) is scheduled to return to the House Floor tomorrow, Thursday for a vote. The move comes after a week of speculation that Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had removed the bill from this week's schedule for unclear reasons. Today it is now definite: the bill will come to a vote tomorrow.

The bill originally stalled on the House Floor last month after three Republican legislators tried to attach a provision that would remove the District's handgun laws. Flustered Democrats, unsure how to proceed with this amendment in play, delayed a vote until tomorrow. The vote will come just days after thousands of marchers converged on the Capitol for the Voting Rights March on April 16.

"On Monday, thousands marched on a cold, windy day to demand the vote," said DC Vote Executive Director Ilir Zherka in a statement. "Congress heard our message. We deserve a vote, and tomorrow we hope we will get one step closer to victory."

DCist will once again bring you Live Blogging of the events on the House floor tomorrow. Stay tuned.

It must suck to live in the capital of the free world, and yet to be ignorant of it's Constitution. Damn thing's on display here.
