We're Here / We're Feared / Get Used To It

image of a table of guns by flickr user e53, used under a creative commons licenseYou have to hand it to the Virginia Citizens' Defense League: they know how to stay in the news. We wrote about them just last Friday, noting their opposition to NYC Mayor Bloomberg's sting operations on Virginia gun shop operators. They're in the Post again today — and once again, they're exploring the blurry borders of Virginia's gun laws.

This time it's about an anti-Bloomberg raffle that the group wants to put on. The "Bloomberg Gun Giveaway" is designed to raise money for two gun merchants who are being sued by the mayor. Folks who spend over $100 in the shops are eligible for a drawing for a semiautomatic pistol, a rifle, and ammunition. The actual winners are set to be chosen at a meeting in Annandale tomorrow night.

Fairfax leaders aren't too keen on this idea, however — or the fact that armed VCDL members have shown up at their offices to discuss the county's opposition to the raffle. In fact, they're trying to shut it down, based upon the giveaway being in violation of gambling laws.

We expressed sympathy for the VCDL's anti-Bloomberg sentiments last week, but we're already swinging back around. Don't get us wrong: we thought Deadwood was awesome, too. But the VCDL's incessant public firearm-brandishing is at the very least impolite. Not all of us are reassured by seeing that the guy behind us in line at Taco Bell is primed to make any potential assailants his Huckleberry. It'd be nice if the VCDL could go back to protecting us from bears and redcoats, and leave policing suburbia to the professional rent-a-cops.

If this entry doesn't scare you, follow the link to the Post article and read the comments. Those people have guns? They shouldn't be allowed to have scissors.

Funny how Fairfax waited until the last minute to announce it. The VCDL has only been talking about it for four months!

Fairfax County -- What a Joke!

Fairfax County -- What a Joke!

I guess razor-sharp wit isn't a prerequisite for VCDL membership.

Our forefathers designed the Constitution and 2A to ensure the power always remained with THE PEOPLE and the government would always fear the people, ensuring everyone knew who was serving whom.

As long as the government fears law abiding citizens, we're on the right track!

When that lawfully armed citizen and constituent asked to speak with Ms. Gross, I'd say that she finally got a taste of what it means to serve the people. However, in failing to hear the voice of the people and listen to a constituent who broke no laws, she has proved herself unworthy of public office by disenfranchising herself from her constituency and should step down and resign her office immediately.

Bloomberg is nothing but a modern day Tory and a conspiratorial felon who would declare himself King if given the chance. The fact that he was "elected" mayor of New York City is of no import, he is but one man and no greater than any other American. That is supposed to be the glory and grace of America.

Then called "New Amsterdam", New York City remained full of Tories and loyal to King George throughout the entire American Revolution and never even realized they were on the wrong side until they were made free by the deeds and sacrifices of men far better than they.

Nothing has changed and it's no surprise they still don't get it and probably never will. But today, as much as ever, the words of Samuel Adams should ring true in the hearts of all Americans and in the ears of Bloomberg and any who would extinguish the torch of freedom:

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!” -Samuel Adams

Enjoy your temporary positions while you have them.

robert, are you kidding me? we virginians just experienced a massacre of 32 people. if someone is nervous and reluctant about meeting with someone carrying a gun, i think they are entitled to a little bit of leeway.

In general, I try to avoid reading posts that have more than two exclamation points. Well, that, and the posts signed with 'American.'

The last just confirmed why...

DCWhee, since I'm obviously so ill informed, please enlighten us all with your definition of "American". Please do not merely relabel definitions of "Citizen" or "Resident"

Anxiously awaiting your response.

Bob
